Modern historians often speculate on the idea of witnessing past historic tragedies: the Bubonic plague, the sinking of the Titanic, the Hindenberg disaster, etc. But on Wednesday night, Later… with Jools Holland captured the most recent tragedy, this time on-stage: Lou Reed and Metallica. Their first live performance in support of Lulu, the eccentric collective dished out a rendition of the album track “Iced Honey”. Watch the video replay below.

Earlier this week, BBC’s music-centric television program Later… with Jools Holland hosted performances by Florence and the Machine, My Morning Jacket, and The Who’s Pete Townshend. All three acts were back in action on Friday night’s episode and you can watch the video replays below. Florence and Co. offered “Breaking Down” from their new LP Ceremonials; MMJ tackled the Circuital tracks “First Light” and “You Wanna Freak Out”; and Townshend backed the new Quadrophenia box set by playing the album track “Drowned”.

The latest installment of Later… with Jools Holland featured performances by Florence and the Machine, My Morning Jacket, and The Who’s Pete Townshend. Given yesterday’s news, we fully expect to hear news of a Florence Welch, Jim James, and Townshend super group within the next 48 hours.

Florence and the Machine performed “What The Water Gave Me” and “No Light, No Light” from their upcoming LP Ceremonials, while My Morning Jacket continued to back their album Circuital with a rendition of “Holdin’ On To Black Metal”. As for Townshend, he supported the new Quadrophenia box set by playing the album track “I’m One”. Check out the video replays below.

Ryan Adams was the latest American export to make an appearance on BBC 2′s Later… with Jools Holland. Below, you can watch the singer-songwriter perform “Lucky Now” from his recently released LP, Ashes & Fire.

In the pre-recorded follow-up to Wednesday’s episode of Later… with Jools Holland, which aired on Friday night, Bon Iver played Bon Iver standouts ”Perth” and Calgary”, Feist showcased Metals‘ ”Bittersweet Melodies”, and Mastodon rocked out to The Hunter‘s “Curl of the Burl”. In addition to being the founder of Squeeze, Jools Holland is also the UK’s answer to Jimmy Fallon: his BBC 2 program, Later… with Jools Holland, consistently offers performances from music’s most elite. On last night’s episode alone, Justin Vernon, wearing one hell of a denim jacket, busted out the horns for a full band rendition of Bon Iver’s “Towers”; Feist, with Mountain Man again providing vocal support, tackled both “The Bad In Each Other” and ”How Come You Never Go There”; and Mastodon, who are apparently only the second metal band ever to appear on the program, wrecked havoc with “Black Tongue”. I don’t know anyone on this side of the Atlantic who gets BBC 2, so check out video clips of the aforementioned performances below.

And one good performance deserves another. After Lana Del Rey‘s killer cut of “Blue Jeans” from the Premises, the artist formerly known as Lizzy Grant made her TV debut on the October 11th edition of Later… with Jools Holland. Tackling “Video Games”, the songbird is the star of a haunting and mesmerizing musical event. Stripped to its most raw and essential, the song is profoundly stirring, allowing Del Rey to shine as the vulnerable vixen caught in the sea of topsy turvy love affair. Del Rey’s upcoming debut full-length is listed as hitting stores on January 23rd, 2012. Her debut single, “Video Games” b/w “Blue Jeans”, is out now via Stranger Records.

During last night’s three hour span of late night television, the following things happened: MGMT brought “Brian Eno” to Letterman (they also delivered a full concert right after), Sigur Rós frontman Jónsi Birgisson capped off his recently completed North American tour by performing “Go Do” on Ferguson, and The Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger, appearing in the midst of J-Fal’s Rolling Stones week, gave his best Lost impersonation on the latest episode of Late. Plus, albeit not falling under the U.S. late night umbrella, both The National and LCD Soundsystem delivered stellar performances on the UK program Live on Jools Holland. Yeah, told you it was a busy night.

Last night, Mos Def joined Damon Albarn, Mick Jones, Paul Simonon, Kano, Bashy, and Bobby Womack appeared on British television program Later with Jools Holland, where they performed two songs from the Gorillaz’ recently released Plastic Beach, the album’s first single, “Stylo”, and “White Fang Flag”.

Thanks to the accompaniment of the National Orchestra of Arabic Music in Syria, “White Fang” proved to be a brilliant listen, but the rare appearance of Mos Def made “Stylo” the evening’s true highlight. In addition to complementing Albarn’s vocals on the track, the rapper also appeared to amp up the energy of the band’s performance, at least if you compare it to the one given on Colbert.

Now if we could only get Murdoc to actually make an appearance…

As Drowned in Sound reports, the Later.. Live With Jools Holland Vol. 2 CD will feature recording of the show’s best performances over the past year, which means you’ll be getting the likes of of Muse, MGMT, Bon Iver, Santigold, Lilly Allen, Al Green, Goldfrapp, The Raconteurs and, of course, Holland himself. The CD set is the second such one released by the show (Vol. 1 hit stores last year), which has been on the air since 1992.

The album will be available beginning October 12th via Rhino. For now, a taste of the musical goodness on Later…
