Perhaps we should all be more than friends with this album...

You like Kate Nash. Made of Bricks drew you in immediately with its hefty quantities of quirk, and Nash’s cutesy sing-song cockney accent was a harsh lullaby in your ears. But now Ms. Nash is back with her sophomore album. And while others may succumb to that dreaded curse on their second go-around, Nash leaps forward with a few minor collisions that she bucks off like a true queen.

To begin, there’s the kind of songs where nothing good is accomplished, like first album re-hashers “Kiss That Girrrl” and “Early Christmas Present”. But the real fun is seeing her metaphorically fumble the ball, only to recover. “I’ve Got A Secret” is spacey, ambient wailing like she’s auditioning for an all-girl version of Blur. The guitar rumbles through a stream of lo-fi energy. She’s no noise queen, though, as the ending of the drum that perpetually speeds up till eventually going nowhere is a bit of a rookie mistake. But if “I’ve Got A Secret” is the Blur misstep, then “I Just Love You More” is where she gets it right. The absurdist chants, the big, beautiful, destructive noises, the bent to oblivion strings; Nash learns quickly how to truly make something kind of lovely from a heap of sonic junk. Just as fun, though, are the purposefully awkward tracks. “Don’t You Want To Share The Guilt” starts off like any pop song Nash could have half-thrown together. But when it breaks down into a frightened stream of conscience, you get the sense that she isn’t afraid to fail.

Of course, this stuff is nothing compared to the actually good songs. “Mansion Song” is her most enthralling creation. If Wendy O. Williams and Debbie Harry busted out some freestyle about getting fucked and receiving chocolates, it wouldn’t come close to the cockney slang of dear sweet Nash. It’s hard to tell if it’s artsy satire (especially with the opera singer in the background) or some legitimate diss against some ungodly cross-section of females, but it’s as raw and emotional as she’s ever been. And the end, with some tribal drumming that evokes the spirit of M.I.A., only further cements her cred. If that’s not your thing (shame on you), then try “Take Me To A Higher Plane”. If Bob Dylan were a girl with a cockney accent and a fondness for the vibe of jangly folk tunes brimming with Riot Grrrl angst, he’d make this song. It shows off both her saccharine singing ability and her balls-to-the-wall feminine energy. Of course, as good as these two are, they shouldn’t excuse the existence of the dark, dramatic, and lonesome “You Were So Far Away”, featuring the line “I can taste the metal, feel the gun in my mouth”.

Anyone else who made an album of mostly missteps and a few shining hunks of pop magic would be considered a failure. But with her wit and self-deprecating prowess, Kate Nash has made an album that is light years ahead of her debut. And it’s one of the few cases where an artist makes a creative leap and you’re almost begging them to never look back. The gimmicks may not have staying value but are, temporarily speaking, such a shift that one can’t help but feel pulled toward repeating them, regardless of the damage they may do to her sound as a whole, over and over again. If that ain’t growing up, then I don’t know what is.

There’s really no point in discussing the epicness of the Glastonbury Music Festival. I mean, we were already blown away after the Pilton, UK based music festival announced just one stage! So, let’s just say, prepare for yourself for further drooling, jaw dropping, and speechlessness, as the 2010 lineup has been fully unveiled.

Topping the bill will be the previously announced likes of U2, Muse, Stevie Wonder, and Jack Johnson, as well as Vampire Weekend, Orbital, Pet Shop Boys, LCD Soundsystem, The Flaming Lips, Phoenix, Ray Davies, Faithless, Snoop Dogg, Fatboy Slim, and Willie Nelson.

Other acts set to perform at the festival, which takes place from June 24-27, include Norah Jones, Slash, Femi Kuti, Hot Chip, The National, MGMT, Grizzly Bear, Groove Armada, Coheed and Cambria, Broken Social Scene, The Gaslight Anthem, The Magic Numbers, The Black Keys, Broken Bells, The xx, Julian Casablancas, Mumford & Sons, The Hold Steady, Mos Def (w/ full live band), Rodrigo Y Gabriela, Dirty Projectors, Simian Mobile Disco, Os Mutantes, and George Clinton with Parliament / Funkadelic.

But wait, there’s even more! Also expect to see Ash, Dizzee Rascal, Florence and the Machine, La Roux, Kate Nash, We Are Scientists, The Temper Trap, Holy Fuck, Frightened Rabbit, Foals, Delphic, Tegan & Sara, Imogen Heap, Devendra Banhart, Empire Of The Sun, Midlake, The Big Pink, Local Natives, Beach House, Crystal Castles, Gomez, Fake Blood, and Here We Go Magic. Plus, there are many more “special guests” still yet to be announced.

You can find the full lineup here or at our Festival Outlook. Sadly, Vanilla Ice didn’t make the cut.

And yes, tickets are currently soldout. So, if you want in, well, perhaps you should sell your kidneys…

Six days after her album drops, Nash will kick off a nine-date North American tour, starting on April 26th in Toronto. She’ll then swing through New England, give New York two dates to themselves (lucky guys!), before heading westward through a couple major markets. The tour is currently slated to end in Los Angeles on May 11th.

But that’s not all she’s up to. Later this summer, she’ll join Cat Power, Gossip, La Roux, Metric, Norah Jones, and many other female artists for the traveling festival Lilith Fair. The festival will travel all North America, going from June 1st to August 1st.

We’re normally filled with as much hate and bile as everyone else when it comes to flying. You have to take your shoes off at the airport, conditions are cramped on board the plane, and the peanuts are getting progressively worse and worse. But in her new video for “Do Wah Doo”, Kate Nash makes us want to board a plane very quickly. Even a Southwest flight.

The song, off of her new album My Best Friend Is You, is full of Nash’s trademark wit and sass, but with a sound wholly reminiscent of the ’60s girl pop sound. It’s bright and bubbly and powered by a rousing bar house piano. It shows some growth musically, but full of that same lyrical stubbornness Nash is known for in some of her songs from her debut, Made of Bricks. While there’s no Dave Grohl in a fat suit, the video’s where more of her spitfire can be found. In the swinging throwback video, Nash vies for the attention (of all things) of a male flight attendant. Between the cheeky choreography or the near crash caused by turbulence, the video is her welcome back and a sign that certain things will never change.

“Do Wah Doo” hits radio on April 12th. My Best Friend Is You is scheduled to be released April 19th via Fiction Records. Find Nash on the Lilith Fair starting this June.

Kate Nash is back, and this time around, she's a little older and a little wiser.

Last year, English songstress Kate Nash joined a punk band called The Receeders, made some songs and played a few gigs. But that “side project”, as she calls it, clearly took her attention away from her second album. Well worry not, as the lass behind songs like “Foundations” and “Pumpkin Soup” is getting ready to release a new album this April.

The album, which is under the working title Crayon Full Of Colour, is going to be a bit of a departure for the 22-year-old. The first song on the album, “Do Wah Doo”, is a spin on some of the old girl group tunes from the ’60s. Plus, a lot of other female music has seeped its way into her own songs. The change, she said, stemmed from simply growing up.

“It comes with being older,” she told Spin in January. “I spent a lot of time off experiencing life since Made of Bricks. I’ve grown up a lot. When I first got involved in music, I thought about music differently. You know, music is so much more than one good song — a band has to mean something. They need to have good personalities, morals, and opinions and stand for something. I really thought about that this time. ’60s girl groups, Riot grrrl rock, and punk, and various others influence me. So, my influences have changed, too, definitely.”

Nash will be on tour with the Lilith Fair this year, so she’ll be around plenty of mature female artists to pull from and learn under. You can download “I Just Love You More” from her official site. “Do Wah Doo” hits radio on April 12th. The album is scheduled to be released April 19th.

<content:mobile>Last year, English songstress Kate Nash joined a punk band called The Receeders, made some songs and played a few gigs. But that "side project", as she calls it, clearly took her attention away from her second album. Well worry not, as the lass behind songs like "Foundations" and "Pumpkin Soup" is getting ready to release a new album this April.

Britpop starlet Kate Nash recently blogged on her MySpace page that she’s spending a couple weeks in LaLa Land to get the gears turning on a follow-up to her UK chart-topping, 2007 debut album, Made of Bricks.

Writes Nash in signature all-lowercase style, “i finally feel ready to start getting stuck into thinking about how to stick these songs together that I’ve been working on for the past 8 months. I feel like the songs are stamps and i need to get someone to lick the the back of the stamps and put them in the right place on the envelope.”

So far she’s just in the “meeting some producers” stage, including “a meeting with this guy in a crunky mansion on laurel canyon and it was huge and i’ve never been in a mansion before and i got to sit and drink rose and look at a mansion and it was very exciting for me.”

Nash also notes that her Hollywood stint coincides with the schedule of her boyfriend’s band, The Cribs.

Songs that Nash has posted on her page that have yet to make their way onto an album include “Model Behaviour”, “Mona the Vampire” (using the same synth-drum beat of her previosly released “Shit Song” and no lyrics other than the title itself) and a cover of The Supremes’ “Baby Love” that gives the song a surprisingly touching, wind-up-jewelry-box reimagining.

Her jocular, folk-infused cover of Gwen Stefani’s “Hollaback Girl” is also worth a listen, especially if you’re looking for something a bit better than what No Doubt offered up at American Idol last week.
