It’s hard to avoid word on the Haiti situation these days. News of the county’s slow recovery has been splattered all over media since January and various organizations, businesses, sports franchises, restaurants, musicians, and individuals have pulled together hoping to raise money for the country in despair. And now vocalist and musician Binki Shapiro of L.A.’s Brazilian/American rock band Little Joy has jumped on the band wagon, announcing the online auction for Haiti relief which she recently put together.

Shapiro has been a member of Little Joy since 2007 alongside vocalist Rodrigo Amarante and drummer Fabrizio Moretti (of The Strokes), and has since collaborated with artists such as Devendra Banhart and Beck. Shapiro explains “In an effort to raise money for the relief efforts in earthquake-devastated Haiti, I’ve rallied a bunch of artists to contribute custom-made artwork (t-shirts, tote bags and other personalized items) for the Crafts For A Cause auction. All proceeds will go to Artists for Peace and Justice, an amazing charitable organization founded by my dear friend Paul Haggis”.

The Crafts For A Cause auction currently has the support of contributing Sub Pop artists, No Age and Fleet Foxes, who will create t-shirts for the auction. But, that’s not even the best part! Daft Punk has also donated its signature (and signed) robots to the cause. All pieces contributed will be included in the online auction starting at 8 a.m. on March 15th. For more information on the project and a few photos of Daft Punks stellar robots head over the Crafts for A Cause website.

Some of your favorite musicians show they're not just talented songwriters.

We love musicians because of what they offer us: songs that fill us with emotions and that allow us to celebrate and even forever cement a particular moment in our lives. And with the recent tragedy in Haiti, many musicians are looking to give back. While some did it with the songs they’re known for, others are taking a different path: making arts and crafts.

According to TwentyFourBit, it’s not so much arts and crafts as it is decorating and designing items for Artists For Peace and Justice, a non-profit that is getting ready to begin significant relief efforts in the country. So far, as a part of the “Crafts For A Cause” project, Conor Oberst has decorated a Fender Strat, while Vampire Weekend is designing a gym bag, and The Strokes even made time for making a tote. And if you’ve ever wondered what a Cedric Bixler-Zavala designed skateboard looks like, here’s your chance. The project, organized by Little Joy’s Binki Shapiro, also promises items from M. Ward, Le Tigre, Spike Jonze, Sia, The Black Keys, and more.

For more details on the project and a list of more artists doing their part, follow the project on Tumblr and Twitter.
But, shouldn't Fab be busy?

Devendra Banhart has always existed in his own creative world, as Pitchfork found out when Banhart revealed his side project in September, an “all-harmonium orchestra called Droney Mitchell.”

When recently speaking to NME, however, the singer/songwriter revealed that another project titled Permanent Adventure is up first. Unfortunately for us, he appears to have roped in Fab Moretti (drummer for The Strokes); the duo have worked together in the past on Megapuss, but Permanent Adventure takes the weird factor to another level:

“We wear helmets, and we have contact mics on the helmets. And we run at each other, and that’s the percussive element. And then I say ‘What are you on?’ and he says ‘I’m on a permanent adventure.’ And that’s the scope of the ad campaign where we’re selling our product, which is extreme cologne.”

Thankfully Banhart is not entirely serious; when asked for confirmation, his publicist said, “The collaboration is real, the cologne is not.”

He also dropped some hints about Little Joy‘s future: “Little Joy’s new record is going to come out on Rough Trade”. We sound like a broken record, but what on earth does this mean for The Strokes? Aren’t they meant to be recording in January? Don’t they have festival appearances planned, already? Heaven knows.

Having completed his take on the Velvet Underground & Nico, Beck is now ready move on to his next task. For the second edition of his Record Club, the acclaimed musician will tackle Leonard Cohen’s 1967 album Songs of Leonard Cohen and has tapped the likes of MGMT, Devendra Banhart, Wolfmother’s Andrew Stockdale, and Little Joy’s Binki Shapiro to help him out.

Per Beck:

An album is chosen to be reinterpreted and used as a framework. Nothing rehearsed or arranged ahead of time. A track is put up here once a week. As you will hear, some of the songs are rough renditions, often first takes documenting what happened over the course of a day. There is no intention to ‘add to’ the original work or attempt to recreate the power of the original recording. Only to play music and document what happens. And those who aren’t familiar with the albums in question will hopefully look for the songs in their definitive versions. ‘Songs Of Leonard Cohen’ by Leonard Cohen was chosen by Andrew from MGMT. For those interested, our close second choice was Ace Of Base, which we’ll keep on the list for next time.

Result #1 of Record Club #2 would be track #1 from Songs of Leonard Cohen, this of course being “Suzanne”. Watch below.

Well, The Strokes are in the headlines again, and no, it’s not because they have come out of hiding with their much-anticipated new LP. But it is related.

You see, Little Joy, the Los Angeles based outfit featuring Rodrigo Amarante, Binki Shapiro, and Fabrizio Moretti, wants to tour this summer in support of their self-titled debut. But with Moretti bogged down in the studio with The Strokes, his bandmates have been forced to seek out a replacement. Only Son’s Jack Dishel was the name they came up with, and will be joining the band when it embarks on a month-long North American swing beginning in June.

<content:mobile>Well, The Strokes are in the headlines again, and no, it's not because they have come out of hiding with their much-anticipated new LP. But it is related.

Only Son’s Jack Dishel was the name they came up with, and will be joining the band when it embarks on a month-long North American swing beginning in June.
