At least for one night, Damon Albarn is resurrecting his super group The Good, the Bad & the Queen. As NME reports, the collective, which also includes The Clash’s Paul Simonon, The Verve/Blur’s Simon Tong, and afrobeat drummer Tony Allen, will play their first show in three years at London’s Coronet on November 10th. The performance will be part of a concert celebrating the 40th anniverary of Greenpeace.

Last year, Albarn hinted that he may finally be ready to follow up The Good, the Bad & the Queen’s 2007 self-titled debut, though we haven’t heard much else since then. Below, you can watch the band perform the album track “Herculean” back in 2007.

The Joe Strummer biopic already in the works should be enough to get any Clash fan excited. But, your silver screen dreams don’t end there, Clash-inites. According to NME, founding members Mick Jones and Paul Simonon are working as advisers for a film about the band’s seminal 1979 album London Calling. The duo will serve as executive producers for the movie, which will be written by English playwright Jez Butterworth (who also wrote the 2010 Naomi Watts-Sean Penn thriller Fair Game). No word yet on any casting decisions, but the film is being co-produced by Alison Owen (mother of pop singer Lily Allen, so expect to see the pop-singer somewhere in there) and shooting begins sometime in 2011. Again, please no James Franco.

On Letterman’s show proper, Gorillaz performed only a snippet of what they played on the webcast, but they still killed it with “Rhinestone Eyes”. Damon Albarn somehow embraces the best parts about frontmen everywhere: funky, cool, sexy, energetic, engaging with everyone — see for yourself below.

But it was after this short performance at the Ed Sullivan Theater that a small studio audience and thousands of people on the internet got to see some of Gorillaz real magic start to appear. For 45 min, the band played nine songs spanning all three of their LPs.

Albarn, Clash stars Paul Simonon and Mick Jones, current Noodle incarnate Miho Hatori, De La Soul, Bootie Brown, Kano, and a string quartet went beyond just summer festival highlights and transitioned to a top tier live act through and through. Each element of the band shined at various moments during the set, from the strings in “On Melancholy Hill” and De La’s notorious laugh on “Feel Good Inc.” to Albarn’s vocal charge towards the end of “Green World” and the rest of the bands’ synchronicity on the funky instrumental “Glitter Freeze”.

If nothing else, this was a precursor to what promises to be a can’t miss tour. If really nothing else, I hope sailor-chic is vogue this year.

From there, Gorillaz will travel south, hitting various cities along the United States east coast — including Boston, New York, Camden, and Washington, DC — before turning west. Stops in Detroit, Toronto, Chicago, and Minneapolis follow and then it’s down to Texas for three dates in late October. The band will cap off their travels with a series of west coast dates, concluding November 3rd in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Update: Only 19 dates have been announced. 20 were initially promised. So hold out hope for one more?

The band’s previously scheduled European tour dates for September will now become part of this tour, with the live shows moving from September into November to include an additional show at the Brighton Centre and Antwerp Lotto. Also, due to new tour routing, the Gorillaz live shows at Glasgow SECC on September 8th, Newcastle Metro Arena on September 11th, and Milan Forum on November 19th have been canceled.

After North America and Europe, Gorillaz will travel to Asia, New Zealand, and Australia for seven additional dates.

Starting September 10th in Birmingham, England, the Damon Albarn-led, Mick Jones and Paul Simonon-featuring outfit will launch a five-date endeavor. Stops in Newcastle, Manchester, and London follow before the trek wraps up on September 22nd in Dublin, Ireland. Tickets go on sale on May 21st at 9am (BST).

As mentioned, the leg, which will be proceeded by appearances at the the Roskilde and Benicasim festivals this summer, is rumored to be the first part of an upcoming world tour set for this fall. Though an official announcement has yet to be made, Gorillaz manager Miles Leonard noted in March (via gorillaz-unofficial.com) that the band plans to soon embark on an “extensive” tour, most of which will come in the headlining variety. So, just sit tight, America. Dates are on the way.

Those who missed the live stream from Friday’s London Roundhouse gig need not worry, because this is the Internet — if you can see it once, you can see it forever. In fact, replays were airing all day at Gorillaz.com and the band’s Facebook page, and as of press time there is still a full-length video up on both sites.

Anyhow, as awesome as Damon Albarn and friends were at Coachella, this performance delivers pretty much everything the Coachella headlining gig had to offer, and a lot of things… er, people that were unfortunately missing (through no fault of Gorillaz). Mos Def is there, displaying even more of that chemistry with Bobby Womack we discovered during the Later…with Jools Holland performance of “Stylo”. In one of the highlights, Mos Def also performs “Sweepstakes”, which really comes alive with the live backing of the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. Bashy and Kano appear with The National Orchestra for Arabic Music for “White Flag”; the latter doing a brilliant intro piece lasting about as long as the song itself. Save for the fact that Gorillaz can’t seem to get “Stylo” quite right — Mick Jones’ guitar was out of tune for half of the song — the band is starting to appear more comfortable with these Plastic Beach performances.

The stream lasts almost an hour and is made up exclusively of songs off the new album (it’s safe to assume they played more songs that didn’t make the stream). As at Coachella, this is more of a traditional live show than Gorillaz displayed for the Demon Days tour, and for a cartoon band there isn’t much going on visually besides what’s on stage — not that that’s not enough. “They are live rehearsals – the core band will be going through the set for Coachella – basic and raw – no frills – allowing the band to tighten up on front of an audience. However, they assure us the band are sounding fantastic!,” explained the band’s management in an issued statement to Gorillaz-Unofficial.com.

Still, don’t fret too much. According to Gorillaz manager Miles Leonard (via gorillaz-unofficial.com), the band plans to embark on an “extensive” tour later this year, most of which will come in the headlining variety. “We are doing very few festivals this year. I would prefer to go out and have the band play their own headline shows first,” explained Morrison. We’ll of course have more details when they become available.

As previously reported, the followup to 2005′s Demon Days will feature a bounty of high-profile contributors, including Lou Reed, Snoop Dogg, Mos Def, Bobby Womack, De La Soul, and Little Dragon. Also making an appearance are none other than The Clash’s Mick Jones and Paul Simonon! Find the complete 16-song tracklisting below.

The story behind the album goes something like this: “The band have taken up residence, recording on a secret floating island deep in the South Pacific, a Plastic Beach HQ, made up of the detritus, debris and washed up remnants of humanity. This Plastic Beach is the furthest point from any landmass on Earth; the most deserted spot on the planet.” Ah, now it all makes sense!

Plastic Beach will be headed by the release of “Stylo” on January 26th. The song, which leaked onto the Internet earlier today, will receive its radio broadcast premiere tonight.

The Gorillaz’ return will be marked by a headline appearance at this year’s Coachella Music Festival. The Sunday April 18 performance will be the first Gorillaz live spectacle on U.S. soil since the Demon Days Live run in April 2006 at New York’s Apollo Theater. So, get ready.
