Bang the gong in celebration!

It took four years, but finally (as previously reported) the newest release by Portland indie-rockers Quasi will surface in a couple weeks on February 23rd. Titled American Gong, the forthcoming effort will be the band’s first with new label Kill Rock Stars and their first with bassist Joanna Bolme. And as the hype machine revs its engines, things are starting to pop up:

The newly released track “Repulsion”, which you can download below, exemplifies the trio’s ability to reign in, and create harmonies, through musical freedom and disintegration. While the vocals of Sam Coomes continue to be in the band’s forefront, Janet Weiss’ drumming combined with the abilities of Bolme create a groove superior to many of the current indie-pop trios.

To help promote the new album, and have a blast with its fans, the outfit will kick-off an extensive US tour in early March. The tour will definitely make a stop near you, as the trio plans to gallivant through the U.S. playing 27 shows, including six in California, with stops in Kansas City, Denver, Portland, Madison, Toronto, Montreal, New York, Nashville, and Chicago. A complete list of dates and locations is available after the jump, too.

<content:mobile>It took four years, but finally (as previously reported) the newest release by Portland indie-rockers Quasi will surface in a couple weeks on February 23rd. Titled American Gong, the forthcoming effort will be the band's first with new label Kill Rock Stars and their first with bassist Joanna Bolme. And as the hype machine revs its engines, things are starting to pop up:

The newly released track "Repulsion", which you can download below, exemplifies the trio's ability to reign in, and create harmonies, through musical freedom and disintegration. While the vocals of Sam Coomes continue to be in the band's forefront, Janet Weiss' drumming combined with the abilities of Bolme create a groove superior to many of the current indie-pop trios.

Check Out:

New year, new record label. At least that’s the case for Quasi. This past June, the Portland indie rockers signed with Kill Rock Stars and are preparing their label debut for 2010. American Gong, as it will be known, is destined to hit retail outlets on February 23rd and is the band’s first album since 2006′s When The Going Gets Dark. It will also be their first record with bassist Joanna Bolme, who joined in 2007. For a group that’s been around since the early 90s, that’s a lot of firsts!

The first thing fans will probably notice from American Gong is it’s somewhat weird cover art. Looking like it was created in Microsoft Paint, the cover is the work of contemporary artists Chris Johanson and Jo Jackson.

Quasi is also switching gears on the road to bring in the new year. On New Year’s Eve, the band will play Portland’s Doug Fir Lounge. The catch is that they’ll be doing a cover set of Who songs, which when combined with the fact that The Shaky Hands and Inside Voices will be opening, makes this an early contender for most epic New Year’s show of the year.

American Gong Tracklist:
01. Repulsion
02. Little White Horse
03. Everything and Nothing at All
04. Bye Bye Blackbird
05. The Jig Is Up
06. Black Dogs and Bubbles
07. Death Is Not the End
08. Rockabilly Party

Includes Faust, Quasi, and... The Fall!

Pavement has begun its duties of guest curators for Weekend #2 of All Tomorrow’s Parities 2010, today unveiling the first five acts that will be joining them between May 14 and 16 at Butlins Resort in Minehead, U.K. And not surprising, it’s quite an eclectic batch, highlighted by the one band that had perhaps strangest relationship with Pavement during its 10 year existence.

Yes, The Fall has been confirmed to take part in next year’s festivities. The English post-punk outfit has long been cited as one of Pavement’s biggest influences, though frontman Mark E. Smith has previously claimed that Malkmus and Co. were a “rip-off” of his band. Interesting to say the least.

Also scheduled to take part are the San Francisco spoken-word based band known as Enablers, the Brooklyn underground rock outfit Endless Boogies, German krautrock band Faust, and Portland indie rockers Quasi.

Unfortunately unless you already have tickets (the festival is already soldout), the above should mean little you, other than it does result in some serious jealousy.
