The 2011 festival season lineup news continues to roll in, as Colorado’s Telluride Bluegrass Festival has announced the beginning (emphasis on beginning) of the lineup for its 38th incarnation. Leading the list of familiar names are Robert Plant & Band of Joy, The Decemberists, The Sam Bush Band, and Béla Fleck & the Original Flecktones (‘original’ refers to the groups 1991 lineup, which recently regrouped). Further highlights include Emmylou Harris and Yonder Mountain String Band. Bush and Fleck will also be part of the Telluride House Band, set to feature Jerry Douglas, Edgar Meyer, Bryan Sutton, and Stuart Duncan, all bluegrass icons in their own rights.

Other acts of note on the bill include Railroad Earth, a solo-set for Meyer, the Punch Brothers, Peter Rowan, Cornmeal, and The Infamous Stringdusters. For a complete rundown of the lineup announced so far, check out Telluride’s festival outlook page. Stay tuned as more artists are announced.

Planet Bluegrass, the company behind Telluride, also recently revealed the lineup for their 39th annual RockyGrass Festival. Steven Martin & The Steep Canyon Rangers top the preliminary announcement, along with the Del McCoury Band and the Sam Bush Bluegrass Band. Complete details and artists list for the July 29th-31st event can be found here.

The Telluride Bluegrass Festival goes down June 16th-19th in Telluride, CO. Tickets for both festivals are currently on-sale here, or by calling 800-624-2422.

Sure, lots of really exciting things happened this week. Our staff’s never been busier. The list below is merely a fraction of every newsworthy event in music. Seriously, though, the only thing that really mattered this week was the beginning of our Year-End Report 2010. Chances are you’ve probably had your fill of various best-of lists–and if you haven’t, you will very soon. Give ours a chance anyway.

Led Zeppelin reunion rumors are like the Energizer bunny from those old commercials. They keep going… and going… and going. So despite numerous rejections from the band, many fans and critics alike can’t help but feel that an announcement is around the corner. Well, we’re sorry to be the ones to burst that bubble yet again. Robert Plant recently stated that he has no interest in a reunion and is annoyed at how the rumors distract from his current work.

“It’s almost as if people can’t see that I have other projects. It’s like a woman with white heels and a pencil skirt passing by will attract my eyes, but most will miss it completely,” the former frontman said (via tourdates.co.uk).

If you were thinking that maybe they’ll be some Zeppelin news after his Band of Joy finishes their tour, again, sorry to disappoint. Plant also mentioned that next up, he’d like to play with nomadic Berber and Tuareg musicians from the tribes of North Africa. So enjoy Band of Joy while it lasts, ’cause it doesn’t look like his music will be getting more accessible any time soon.

Instead of wishing for what may never come, perhaps Zeppelin fans can take solace that Band of Joy has been playing some tunes from Plant’s former band. Plus, there is always Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Experience. Either way, enjoy what you can get and ignore the rumors.

Jimmy Page wants to tour too.

It’s not every day that you get a chance to see a member of Led Zeppelin live. But that’s exactly what lucky Americans and Canadians will be getting early next year, when Robert Plant takes his Band of Joy on the road. Touring in support of his critically acclaimed album, Band of Joy, the 15-date North American leg is looking to make the dead winter of January and February a little brighter. And if you’re wondering, yes, the band has been known to play a Zeppelin song or two during their live performance.

The latest trek will begin in Asheville, NC on January 18th, and then pretty much sticks to the Eastern time zone for the entire set of dates. The only non-US date is a stop in Toronto on January 22nd. So far, the tour is scheduled to end near where it began, with a pair of dates in Nashville on February 8th and 9th. Backing Plant will be the same group that played with him on the record: Patty Griffin, vocals; Darrell Scott, multi-instrumentalist/vocals; Byron House, bass/vocals; Marco Giovino, drums and percussion/vocals; and co-producer Buddy Miller, guitar/vocals. The North Mississippi All Stars Duo will open for the group on all dates.

Now, since there’s Robert Plant news, obviously we can’t let you go without noting his former bandmate’s recent comments. At the Classic Rock “Roll of Honour” Awards last week, Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page mentioned plans to tour himself. “I’m desperate to be playing, but it won’t be ’til next year,” Page said. “I’ll get a good vehicle to get out there and do some concerts.” Hmm, a vehicle like a certain Band of Joy playing next year? This year’s setlists have already been full of Zeppelin songs (“Misty Mountain Hop”, “Rock & Roll”, “Tangerine”), so it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch. Would it?

<content:mobile>It's not every day that you get a chance to see a member of Led Zeppelin live. But that's exactly what lucky Americans and Canadians will be getting early next year, when Robert Plant takes his Band of Joy on the road. Touring in support of his critically acclaimed album, Band of Joy, the 15-date North American leg is looking to make the dead winter of January and February a little brighter. And if you're wondering, yes, the band has been known to play a Zeppelin song or two during their live performance.

Now, since there's Robert Plant news, obviously we can't let you go without noting his former bandmate's recent comments. At the Classic Rock "Roll of Honour" Awards last week, Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page mentioned plans to tour himself. "I'm desperate to be playing, but it won't be 'til next year," Page said. "I'll get a good vehicle to get out there and do some concerts." Hmm, a vehicle like a certain Band of Joy playing next year? This year's setlists have already been full of Zeppelin songs ("Misty Mountain Hop", "Rock & Roll", "Tangerine"), so it wouldn't be too much of a stretch. Would it?

Just not with each other.

While Jimmy Page mentioned last December that he was working on new material, he has remained secretive about what exactly this project would be — up until now. While he didn’t exactly bear his soul, he did let a few more tidbits slip to BBC 6 Music last week.

At Mojo Magazine‘s award ceremony in London, where he was inducted into the Mojo Hall Of Fame, the former Led Zeppelin guitarist revealed that the new music isn’t just for a single project, but a number of different ones.

“I’m just looking forward to making some music and surprising people with it,” he said. “It won’t be just teaming up with lots of people who are [big] names. I’ve got an idea of something which I’ve had for a long time and now’s the time to do it.”

That said, if you’re expecting something like Led Zeppelin, you may be disappointed. Page also noted the new material would be a change in direction from his previous offerings. On the plus side, we’ll get to see what the guitarist has been working on sometime later this year.

“I have got other ideas that have been nagging at me for a long long time, I think the way to present music is same picture, different frame; and sometimes this frame is quite radical.” he said.

Meanwhile, Page’s former bandmate recently detailed the specifics of what he’s up to these days. As previously reported, Robert Plant will be spending the summer touring with his new band, Band of Joy. What’s more, as TwentyFourBit points out, the outfit will also release the 12-track Band of Joy on September 13th via Rounder Records. Included on the record will be renditions of Los Lobos’s “Angel Dance”, Low’s “Silver Rider” and “Monkey”, Townes Van Zandt’s “Harms Swift Way”, and The Kelly Brothers’ “Falling In Love Again”. Check out the album’s tracklist and the band’s tour dates below.

So the question now becomes: at what point do we stop considering a Led Zeppelin reunion event a remote possibility?

Yes, the Led Zeppelin frontman has unveiled his latest project, a new band consisting of Patty Griffin (vocals), Buddy Miller (guitar), Darrell Scott (multi-instrumentalist), Byron House (bass), and Marco Giovino (drums). Together they form Robert Plant and the Band of Joy, and come this summer they’ll be hitting the road in support of their forthcoming debut record.

Currently, the dates see Plant and co. touring the southern United States (including Florida) for two weeks in July, kicking off on the 13th in Memphis. They’ll use the performances to debut music from the aforementioned album, which was produced by Miller and due for release, via Rounder Records, in the late summer or early fall. The record will mark Plant’s first new release since Raising Sand, his 2006′s Grammy Award-winning collaboration with Alison Krauss.

2010 is a busy year for surviving Led Zeppelin members. Guitarist Jimmy Page will be taking new material on tour, bassist John Paul Jones is playing big festivals and performing on TV with Them Crooked Vultures, and, as we have just learned, vocalist Robert Plant has announced an upcoming solo album (via Rock it Out!). Unfortunately, a reunion still isn’t happening.

The followup to his 2005 solo album Mighty ReArranger and his Grammy-winning 2007 collaboration with Alison Krauss entitled Raising Sand, the new LP will be called It’s Rude to Say No. Plant worked with producer Buddy Miller on the album, his ninth solo effort overall.

If the Nashville/Miller thing doesn’t tip you off as to what it might sound like, ledzeppelinnews.com reports that Plant is recording a version of the traditional bluegrass song “Cindy”, retitled “Get Along Home, Cindy”. Moreover, the guy who originally released all this information and is appearing on the album, singer-songwriter Darrell Scott, said this:

Those two-plus weeks were some of the most memorable times I’ve ever had in the studio. … The number-one thing is that Robert loves music. You think they’re posing and just getting through it, but I was humbled with how Robert Plant loved the music — old country, blues, rockabilly.

Plant clearly has Zeppelin far from his thoughts, but this is still exciting news if you happen to be a fan of his solo work or Raising Sand. The album will be out later this year, exact date unknown.

Also, if you live in England, you can see Plant live, according to ledzeppelinnews.com, at London’s Abbey Road Studios, on February 25th (assuming you can find tickets). Get this: the man will be performing with a 72-voice choir, the London Oriana Choir. The concert, Sound & Vision, benefits Cancer Research UK.

Following comments made by Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant earlier this week that he has been in talks with Glastonbury about an appearance at next year’s festival, “but I have no idea who with,” rumors began to circulate that the singer was perhaps hinting at another reunion of his legendary outfit.

Fortunately, it does not appear that we’ll have to go through that roller coaster ride of “will they” or “won’t they” again. Speaking in a recent interview with BBC6, Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones shot down rumors of another reunion.

“Jimmy and I rehearsed a bit with Jason Bonham and we couldn’t really agree on singers and that fell by the wayside. Then this came along and to be honest, I’m really happy.”

The “this” being referenced is of course Jones’ involvement with the Them Crooked Vultures supergroup, and with the band’s self-titled debut studio album set for release on November 17th and more tour dates likely to follow, it does not appear that this involvement will end anytime soon.

In other words, a Led Zeppelin reunion, at least one involving John Paul Jones, probably isn’t all that likely for the foreseeable future.
