As previously reported, Lulu Gainsbourg is honoring his late father, French innovator Serge Gainsbourg, with a covers album. Aptly titled From Lulu to Gainsbourg, the 16-track collection packages Lulu’s own reworkings alongside contributions from Iggy Pop, Rufus Wainwright, The Pogues’ Shane McGowan, and — of course — Johnny Depp.

With the album now out in Europe, Cover Me points to online streams of said covers, including “Initial B.B.” by Iggy Pop, “Je Suis Venu Te Dire Que Je M’en Vais” by Wainwright, “Sous Le Soleil Exactement” by MacGown, and “Ballade de Melody Nelson” by Depp and French singer Vanessa Paradis.
No one in-fights like the Pogues.

Alright, all together now: It was Christmas eve, babe / In the drunk tank…

Your last chance to holler those words with hundreds of inebriated comrades comes this December with The Pogues’ final Christmas tour. Maybe. Not surprisingly with these guys, there’s a wee bit of disagreement.

The band’s website posted a flyer advertising a “Farewell Christmas Tour” (dates below). Guitarist Phil Chevron took to the band’s message board to dispute the claim. Bandmate Spider Stacy fired back and a hilariously bitchy catfight began. Never has a band better resembled a passive-aggressive family reunion.

Chevron: “This claim does not come from me and I will neither be supporting it nor discussing it. You may consider it a marketing ploy if you wish.”

Stacy: “This is the last Christmas tour for the foreseeable future. That’s not to say we won’t be showing up at festivals here and there or maybe even the odd gig around the U.K. and Ireland and certainly in Europe. But we’re tired of dragging our weary, freezing carcasses around these drowning islands every December, so we’re going to give it a rest before you get tired of it, too. Go and see the Libertines. They’re the best.”

C: “As you can see, opinion is not uniform on the matter. Spider is using the royal “we” here.”

S: “Using the royal We? God forbid a band member would come on these pages and do something like that! Right, I’m off to pay the plumber.”

Keep on eye on this thread to see if the bitchfighting continues. Until then, here’s what we do know: There is a Christmas tour happening this December. Tickets go on sale this Friday. It may or may not be the last. They will play “Fairytale of New York” (probably). The Libertines are the best.

Of all the pro-Haiti benefit collaborations that have surfaced over the last two months, the Shane MacGowan-led, Johnny Depp, Nick Cave, Bobby Gillespie, Glen Matlock, Chrissie Hynde, Paloma Faith, and Eliza Doolittle-featuring cover of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins 1956 hit “I Put a Spell On You” is easily the most intriguing. Unlike “We Are the World 25″, the lineup actually kicks ass — where else are you going to find a movie star jamming out with a screaming Pogues frontman? And unlike Simon Cowell’s “Everybody Hurts”, the song selection was not the most obvious of choices.

You can check out the end result, in video form below. The mp3 form of the song will be available beginning March 8th via 7digital. All proceeds go to Concern, a charity which has provided assistance to some of the poorest countries in the world including Haiti.

This one might just take the cake...

We’ve already seen quite a few once-in-a-lifetime musical collaborations spawn in benefit of Haiti (Jay-Z + U2; Dave + Neil; Thom + friends). But this one might just take the cake:

According to The Guardian, Nick Cave, Johnny Depp (he’s a musician too, don’t you know!), The Pogues’ Shane MacGowan, and Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie are reportedly teaming up for a charity single. Though exact details of the project are still unclear, the high-profile foursome, along with singer and actress Vanessa Paradis, are said to be recording a cover of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins 1956 hit “I Put a Spell On You”, with all proceeds from the song’s sale going to the Haiti earthquake relief.

In other Haiti benefit news, the recently released Hope For Haiti Now was the first digitial-only release to hit #1. Good news, Haiti gets lots of money. Bad news, Ezra got bumped.
