President Barack Obama built his entire campaign on the premise of hope and change. Along the way, he’s realigned the musical tastes associated with the leader of the free world, as evidenced by his love of hip-hop and Al Green and invitations to acts like The Killers and Yim Yames to play the White House. Fun fact: President Bush only had a paltry 250 songs on his iPod.

In an effort to further play up his musical savviness (which undoubtedly translates to more votes in the Williamsburg region), Obama’s campaign has dropped its very own Spotify playlist. (We take 100% credit, btw.) Spanning 28 tracks, the playlist includes names like Bruce Springsteen, Arcade Fire, Florence and the Machine, Wilco, U2, No Doubt, and Noah and the Whale. Oh, and if you haven’t seen it yet, here’s Obama’s smokin’ rendition of Green’s “Let’s Stay Together”:

A stage which collapsed prior to Sugarland’s performance at the Indiana State Fair last night killed five people and injured dozens more, reports the Associated Press. According to witnesses, a large gust of wind caused the stage to collapse, sending steel scaffolding, lighting, and sound equipment into the audience. Video footage of the collapse can be seen here (warning: it’s extremely graphic.)

The tragedy comes less than a month after separate stage collapses at Cheap Trick and Flaming Lips concerts. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured in either incident.

Aside from those items, it’s hard to find any more “positives” from this “We Are the World: 25″. For one, the song is completely overtaken by auto-tune midway through — you can thank Lil Wayne, Jamie Foxx, and T-Pain for this! That’s of course before it turns into a full-fledged hip-hop song, complete with club beats, which doesn’t make much sense when you consider that the first half of the song features Justin Bieber, Barbra Streisand, the dude from Maroon 5, a Michael Jackson montage, and a really pitchy chorus. I guess what I’m trying to say is the whole thing feels like a misguided and undefined mishmash of various solo talents that never really comes together. Oh well, it still was for a good cause…

So far, there is one confirmation, Mexican alternative band Zoé, while Pavement, Pretty Lights, and The Raveonettes all are heavily rumored. There is also speculation that Thom Yorke and Jack White will appear, but in what form — Radiohead vs. solo; The Dead Weather vs. White Stripes vs. solo — remains unclear. In semi-related news, Coachella’s sister festival, the country-oriented Stagecoach Music Festival, unveiled its 2010 bill today. Among the highlights to appear at the festival, which takes place from April 24-25, 2010 in Indio, CA, are Keith Urban, Toby Keith, Brooks & Dunn, Sugarland, Phil Vassar, Merle Haggard, and The Avett Brothers. Tickets will go on sale beginning Friday, October 16th via Ticketmaster.com.
