We can now add Three Mile Pilot to the seemingly endless list of 90s bands reuniting this year. But unlike going on victory-lap tours, the San Diego band is actually releasing a new album called The Inevitable Past is The Future Forgotten (which totally reads like the title of a song The Books would write). If you don’t know 3MP, you might know the bands that spawned from the group: Pinback and The Black Heart Procession. Both bands had arguably more success than their lone predecessor, but members Armistead Burwell Smith, Pall Jenkins, and Thomas Zinser have some more things to say, and after a 13 year hiatus, they clear their throats, inhale, and…

In a stellar return, Three Mile Pilot drop the video for “What’s In The Air”, a mid-tempo rocker that embraces a bands 13-year hibernation from 1997. The video, directed by Sean Gillane, alternates between a nice stroll through the woods, a suicidal meteorologist, an incidentally nefarious date at the beach, a man who gets infected with outer space, and the band just grooving against some some stars. Correlation? Things are pretty fucked up in 2010, so lets just write a bangin alt-90s song tinged with influences from our other bands. I applaud that.

The Inevitable Past is The Future Forgotten is out now on Temporary Residence Ltd.

The Black Heart Procession can be a handy band to be familiar with, if you aren’t already. For one, their name sound really intense and can make you look like a badass around non-music savvy people (kind of like School of Seven Bells). Just saying “I’m going to go see The Black Heart Procession (note: often shortened by fans to just ‘Black Heart’)” can raise your numerical rating one to two points in the eyes of the opposite sex. Secondly, if you ever find you hipster status called into question or find someone inferring that you are a poseur, drop The Black Heart Procession bomb on them. Chances are they will not be able to keep up with you in a Black Heart conversation because if they were a Black Heart Procession fan, you would know about it already. They are a devout and vocal bunch. Then ask yourself “Why am I hanging out with people who call me out on my muscial taste?”

A good introduction to the San Diego indie veterans might be their new mini-album, Blood Bunny/Black Rabbit. Why? Well, besides featuring three brand new songs, it also offers up collaborations with two mainstays of the college music scene, reggae icon Lee “Scratch” Perry and the artsy Eluvium. So yeah, you basically get it all: new songs and old ones, songs by just the band and songs that include a couple of your faves. Then you can check out the band in person as they open a few dates for The Books. By a few I mean the whole cross-country tour.
