The Internet has found itself a new ally in its ongoing fight against SOPA and PIPA. As Billboard reports, Trent Reznor, MGMT, The Lonely Island, Nada Surf’s Daniel Lorca, and OK Go have all co-signed an open letter to Congress expressing their opposition to the legislation. The letter was also signed by comedian Aziz Ansari, fillmaker Lloyd Kaufman, MythBusters‘ Adam Savage, and other members of the entertainment industry.

“We fear that the broad new enforcement powers provided under SOPA and PIPA could be easily abused against legitimate services like those upon which we depend. These bills would allow entire websites to be blocked without due process, causing collateral damage to the legitimate users of the same services – artists and creators like us who would be censored as a result,” the letter reads.

“We are deeply concerned that PIPA and SOPA’s impact on piracy will be negligible compared to the potential damage that would be caused to legitimate Internet services. Online piracy is harmful and it needs to be addressed, but not at the expense of censoring creativity, stifling innovation or preventing the creation of new, lawful digital distribution methods.” You can read the letter in its entirety below.

As Billboard also reports, a number of musicians have also voiced their opposition to the legislation via their personal websites and social media platforms. Peter Gabriel blacked out his website for the entire day on Wednesday, while Radiohead posted an Anti-PIPA bar across the top of their website. Others including The Roots’ ?uestlove, A-Trak, and Theophilus London have voiced their opposition on Twitter.

In wake of these protests, a number of lawmakers have withdrawn their support of SOPA and PIPA, according to The Washington Post. Representative Darrell Issa has also formally introduced an alternative piece of legislation titled OPEN, which would call on the International Trade Commission (ITC) to handle overseas “rogue” Web sites rather than the Justice Department, reports PCMag.com.

“OPEN is a targeted, effective solution to the problem of foreign, rogue Web sites stealing from American artists and innovators,” Issa said in a statement. “Today’s Internet blackout has underscored the flawed approach taken by SOPA and PIPA to the real problem of intellectual property infringement. OPEN is a smarter way to protect taxpayers’ rights while protecting the Internet.”

We are writing to express our serious concerns regarding the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA) and the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA).

As creative professionals, we experience copyright infringement on a very personal level. Commercial piracy is deeply unfair and pervasive leaks of unreleased films and music regularly interfere with the integrity of our creations. We are grateful for the measures policymakers have enacted to protect our works.

We, along with the rest of society, have benefited immensely from a free and open Internet. It allows us to connect with our fans and reach new audiences.

On the surface, it seems a little silly to give a real review to a fake rap album. But The Lonely Island is not your average musical comedy group. They nab huge guest spots and write soaring hooks around songs that are good enough to make you have to decide between singing along and cracking up. Plus, with a Grammy nomination under their belts, they know how important they are to the music world (“We invented this fake rap shit/the world needs us!”). Who are we to argue with them? The dudes are back, and that’s never a bad thing.

Turtleneck & Chain starts out strong – the boys bring the laughs fast and furious for the first four songs. Album opener “We’re Back” is a perfect send-up of any big name rap album intro – complete with Jorma Taccone as the hype man – that juxtaposes the hard rap feel with the very un-rap lyrical content about the their own impotence. Like many of their songs, the next track “Mama” is a one-note joke – but like many others, it’s so funny that it doesn’t matter.

The boys get to Turtleneck & Chain’s major highlight fast, as the Akon-featuring “I Just Had Sex” comes in just under four minutes into the album. In terms of viral internet impact, “I Just Had Sex” is up there with “Dick in a Box” and “Jizz in My Pants” as one of their mega hits. With over 90 million (and counting) YouTube views, it’s unquestionably the most popular song on the album – only the “Dick in a Box” sequel “Motherlover” even comes somewhat close. Both of these hits work well on the album without their visual counterparts. The sheer joy of “Sex” especially oozes off the record, and it’s always great to hear Justin Timberlake singing again in any capacity (seriously, JT, come back to music), even if it’s all about him loving Andy Samberg’s mother (“Imma be the syrup, she can be my waffle”).

The guest list on this record is impressive – with everyone from Michael Bolton to Nicki Minaj – but some of them work much better than others. Michael Bolton in particular gets put to good use in “Jack Sparrow” – the boys just want to make a sexy club jam, but Bolton is distracted by the Pirates of the Caribbean marathon he just watched and ends up singing about Jack Sparrow instead, much to the chagrin of Samberg and the gang. It’s a great gag that gets better when put to video, but it still plays almost as well in simple audio. On the other hand, Beck apparently showed up on “Attracted to Us”, but it’s easy to miss if you aren’t looking for it, as he’s mostly relegated to being a backup singer. Others still are just there – Snoop Dogg’s guest verse seems like it could have shown up on any Snoop-featuring track. Yes, he’s singing about fluffy turtlenecks and sippin’ on light beer, but seeing as how he’s become a big parody of himself these days, it doesn’t seem too far off anyways.

Just like Incredibad, the non-digital short songs are a mixed bag. Even the most uneven ones have their moments, but only a couple really live up to their SNL-appearing counterparts. The title track is just a wonderfully silly rap song, while “No Homo” is a fantastic parody of the dumb trend of rappers tossing around “no homo” to defend themselves against sounding gay. Predictably, the song ends up with at least one of the dudes coming out of the closet (but, “no homo”!) and then just as the album began, there’s a great take on any-given-album’s outro. The dudes wear some of their influences on their sleeves this time around, as “Rocky” is just a more outrageous (and gory) take on DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince’s “I Think I Can Beat Mike Tyson”, while “Trouble on Dookie Island” is a pitch-perfect Ghostface Killah parody. If it weren’t so ridiculous (and wasn’t about poop), it wouldn’t sound too out of place on FishScale – the dudes never stop rapping for a hook, and it’s got a Scarface audio clip in there for good measure.

In the end, Turtleneck & Chain ends up being about on par with Incredibad – maybe even a bit better, regardless of the flaws. This is not something that is meant to be overly scrutinized. This is a comedy album that just happens to have more catchy songs than your average pop radio album. Yes, the lyrics are sophomoric and vulgar, but why the hell would you want it any other way? Pop it in, sing along, and prepare to laugh your ass off.

Pop it in, sing along, and prepare to laugh your ass off.</content:mobile>

Few things can top the comedic genius of The Lonely Island, especially when it comes in the form of the trio’s new video for “We’re Back”. In a mere two minutes, the group tackles the subject of the male anatomy, drops such instant classic one-liners as “this is Garfield sex music” and “m*therfucker’s got horse blood, what you got?”, and reminds us that their Grammy nomination was earned because “we started this fake rap shit.” They went H.A.M.

Sophomore LP drops on May 10th.

They made a huge ass announcement regarding new music back in October, but now one of Saturday Night Live’s finest musical exports – The Lonely Island – have finally put a street date on the follow-up to their breakthrough debut LP. Direct Current points out that the new album will be titled Turtleneck and Chain and is set to hit shelves and digital retailers on May 10th (via Universal Republic).

Our own Chris Coplan has already declared that it would be near impossible to trump Incredibad (which boasted cameos from guests like Justin Timberlake, Julian Cassablancas, and Natalie Portman), but the group’s latest hilarious musical output is suggesting that the new songs may actually give classics like “I’m On A Boat” a run for their money.

Case in point: Lonely Island – which is comprised of SNL cast members Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone – have already released an Akon-featuring video titled “I Just Had Sex”, and have even landed a guest spot from the one and only Nicki Minaj. And while it will surely be difficult to top the outrageously ridiculous video the boys did with Lil’ John, the clip for the Minaj-featuring “Creep” hints that Samberg & co. definitely have the ability to put a together another star-studded guest list. The video also finds pencil-mustached cult legend, John Waters, making an appearance and has instructions for what may end up being the lamest club dance move since the Macarena.

A tracklist hasn’t been announced yet, but The Biebs may already be on board. Visual proof can be had by watching a teaser for a clip called “The Roomate”, below.

<content:mobile>They made a huge ass announcement regarding new music back in October, but now one of Saturday Night Live’s finest musical exports – The Lonely Island – have finally put a street date on the follow-up to their breakthrough debut LP.

A little over a year ago, the Andy Samberg-led, Saturday Night Live comedy/musical troupe The Lonely Island celebrated the release of its much celebrated debut, Incredibad. There were tons of reasons to like it, but perhaps the biggest highlight was the appearance of a healthy list of musical heavyweights collaborating on songs featuring absurd titles like “Dick in the Box”, “I’m in a Boat”, and “Lazy Sunday”.

The Strokes’ Julian Casablancas was one such heavyweight, collaborating on the track “Boombox”. Last night, The Strokes frontman made an unexpected appearance on late night television to finally give the song its so deserved music video, and, not surprising, the result was as absurd as only one could dream for. Donning futuristic leather outfits, Samberg and Casablancas hold true to the songs lyrics, as the duo makes their way through country clubs, city streets, and an old folk’s home with a boombox — you can guess what happens next. Then again (SPOILER ALERT), I had no idea Casablancas would by singing in glitter and smashing flower vases by the time the two-and-a-half minute clip was all said and done. So, enjoy.

It’s safe to say that until recently Saturday Night Live was in a bit of a creative lull. Key cast members were leaving for more lucrative movie deals, only stopping by for the occasional cameo. It was a sad time for the institution that started the careers of almost everyone in the pantheon of comedy. Then in 2005, Andy Samberg stepped in and with the help of some college friends (Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone) saved the show. moving their comedy group, The Lonely Island Club, to parody super stardom. For the first time in what seemed like ages, people were watching SNL again, and with the help of some impressive celebrity cameos, thanks to NBC, the digital shorts quickly became the must see events of the weekend, not to mention on the Internet. Once more, quotes from SNL could be heard everywhere as people attempted to recreate the songs for better or worse.

Incredibad is the culmination of the past four years of hilarity in song form. Unless you have been tuned out from pop culture all together, it was hard not to have seen the videos of such shorts as “Dick In A Box”, and the one to start it all, “Lazy Sunday”. The star power makes them even more hilarious, especially with the side splitting “Natalie’s Rap”, in which little Natalie Portman moved from cute starlet to funny bad-ass thanks to the gangster rap parody of herself. With that, Saturday Night Live was again an institution in which celebrities could go and have fun with themselves and their fellow actors. Seeing Justin Timberlake with a wrapped present on his package shows us that even an ego can have a sense of humor and seem normal. Now every time we see Mr. Timberlake pop up (the grocery store employee in “Jizz In My Pants”, for instance) you can’t help but smile and gain that much more respect for the man, even if you have no desire to own his records. Recently, T-Pain got in on the fun with “I’m On A Boat”, which carries his trademark auto-tune to drive the ridiculousness home.

Aside from those tracks that originated as shorts, the album is filled with other gems such as the raunchy party anthem “Santana DVX” and the title track, which tells the story of the group’s origin, something about an all male threesome to save an alien race that ends with a wish being granted. I’d say more, but I can’t give all the secrets away. Then there’s “Dream Girl”, a song about Chex-Mix and the love of a homeless woman, which features the very unlikely duet of Norah Jones. How about that for a cameo?

It’s difficult to do what they do, never to rip directly from a popular song, but skirt around it, playing with its style, and moving it to the edge of over the top absurdity. Some of these tracks simply are not done justice without their visual counterpart, as no detail is spared. But in terms of a musical comedy album, it hits the mark. The humor is simple enough for anyone to understand, yet specific and random enough to make it funny to just about everyone, unless, of course, “Ras Trent” hits a little too close to home. In the end, true funny is an art. Even those that have been doing it for decades have problems, but that is what is so beautiful about it. Real comedy is rare, so you better catch it while you can.

The second indie-friendly music guest to take to Saturday Night Live since the turn of the new year, TV on the Radio hit the stage Saturday night to introduce mainstream America to the album many within the blogosphere, including yours truly, consider the best of 2008. Unfortunately, whether because of faulty sound equipment or some unknown paranormal event that presents Tunde Adebimpe and Co. from capturing the same intensity and catchiness that what we’ve heard on Dear Science and every subsequent tour date that followed, last night’s performances of “Dancing Choose” and “Golden Age” were a bit disappointing. Needless to say, I’m not sure many TV on the Radio virgins walked away looking to get on in the fun.

But the sounds of TV on the Radio weren’t the only thing to resonate from the speakers of one’s television last night, and there was in fact, one musical highpoint. Ahead of Tuesday’s release of its debut studio album, Incredibad, The Lonely Island offered up a brand new selection entitled, “I’m on a Boat”. The title says it all, and like may other of the the Andy Samberg led trio’s hilarious songs, this one features a particularity noteworthy guest. After all, what would a boat trip be without T-Pain and his autotune along for the ride?
