Generally speaking, the end of Memorial Day weekend signals the unofficial beginning of summer. Lots of us have been free for awhile now, but for those of you who have yet to finish up the semester, leave your day job, and head to the beach, you’ll find various news items that will make you long for the dog days and cool nights of the season. There are festival updates as well as album and concert reviews to get you ready.

You’ll also find lots of other things, some intriguing and others just plain ridiculous.

Need I say more?

– Let’s begin with the obligatory festival updates: Bumbershoot, Musicfest NW, Outside Lands , and Capitol Hill Block Party unveiled their lineups this week. The North Coast Music Festival debuts in Chicago this September. The economy put an end to the 2010 Canadian Virgin Festivals.

– And now the obligatory Arcade Fire news item: the group will play the first non-festival show of its upcoming tour in Sherbrooke, Quebec. Sorry, Toronto.

– Finally, the obligatory tour announcements: Paul McCartney, Arcade Fire, Belle & Sebastian, Pixies, The National, Smashing Pumpkins, Aerosmith, Robyn, Dirty Projectors, Yeasayer will all be hitting the road in the weeks and months ahead.

Moving on…

– M.I.A. blasted New York Times writer Lynn Hirschberg with a single entitled “Haters”.

– Ali-Ollie Woodson of the quintessential Motown group The Temptations passed away at the age of 58.

– Antoine Fuqua (of Training Day fame) is set to direct the Tupac Shakur biopic.

– Wilco and Coldplay are supporting youth sports teams.

– They might be on hiatus, but look for new material from Stereolab this fall.

– Radiohead‘s Phil Selway will make his solo debut in late August.

– Nick Freed reviewed Expo 86, the hotly anticipated new album by Wolf Parade.

– Much has been made of the Rolling Stones’ Exile on Main St. reissue. Here’s what Stephen Foster had to say.

– Elias Newman chatted up Chad Elliot of Funeral Party.

– For those of you who missed LCD Soundsystem at Chicago’s Metro last Friday, Meghan Brosnan was there.

– On that note, Ted Maider, Winston Robbins, Kacie McKinney provided an extensive recap of Sasquatch! 2010.

– Oh, and we’re continuing our plot to take over the world.

Former Temptations lead singer Ali-Ollie Woodson died Sunday in Southern California, according to Spinner. Diagnosed in 2008 with leukemia, he had a lengthy battle with the disease before it took his life. He was 58.

Having served as the lead singer beginning in 1984 (replacing Dennis Edwards), he was with the Temptations for several incarnations, as well as the Temptations Revue from 2006-2008. He had writing and producing credits on, as well as sang, “Treat Her Like a Lady”, the 1984 comeback hit that reached #2 on the U.S. R&B chart. He also sang on R&B top-5 hit “Lady Soul”. His last album with the group was For Lovers Only in 1995, after which he embarked on a solo tour.

During this time, he also had his first run-in with cancer, a throat cancer for which he underwent multiple surgeries.

Speaking to the Associated Press, Motown Alumni Association president Billy Wilson said, “He had this swagger about himself, he was cool. He had a coolness about himself that was really very inviting.

“If we ever asked him to do anything, he never said, ‘Well, it’s going to cost you.’ He’d always say, ‘Yeah, let’s go’. He was just a star performer. Wonderful person. Wonderful, wonderful person. He was very kind.”

Woodson was an occasional film and T.V. actor, having notably appeared in The Jamie Foxx Show as a mental patient. He leaves behind wife Juanita and several children.

Lots of musicians like Barack Obama. Lots of musicians like Barack Obama so much so that they performed in support of him during his run for the White House. And now, unsurprisingly, a number of our favorite acts will soon be congregating in Washington, DC to celebrate Barack Obama’s victory.

According to Fox News, Stevie Wonder, Barbra Streisand, and Bruce Springsteen are among the musicians who have been invited to perform on inauguration day, while The Dead, the Jonas Brothers, and Miley Cyrus are head the acts rumored to be playing at any one of the official balls and events leading up to it.

If Springsteen does make an inauguration day appearance, it could be just one of many shows he will perform in Washington over the course of the week. In fact, according to The Washington Post, the Boss is already confirmed to perform a free show on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on January 18th.

Of course, like any good music extravaganza, one doesn’t have to be part of the official festivities to get in on the fun. For one, Elvis Costello and Sting are already confirmed to be playing the “unofficial” Creative Coalition inauguration ball, while Ted Leo and Andrew Bird lead the indie charged bill holding down the The Big Shoulders Ball at the Black Cat on January 19th.

Still not enough for you? Have we mentioned Aretha Franklin, Alicia Keys, George Clinton, The Temptations, Sam Moore, and Dionne Warwick are just some of the others expected to make an appearance at some point during the week? And even then, we’re still probably only scratching the surface…

If anything, Barack Obama’s inaguration will be bringing the music to the nation’s capital for at least one week. So if you weren’t lucky enough to score a ticket to the actual ceremony, sip the bubbly and take in one of these shows!
