You would probably have to ask a Ph.D in popular music if there’s a genre called “post –post-hardcore”, but if Thursday have anything to do with it, then they’ll be the ones to let you know what it actually sounds like. After teasing audiences with sonic glimpses of their sixth studio LP on a recent tour, the New Jersey-based emo/post-hardcore/screamo/whatever-core outfit have officially announced that the album – titled No Devolucion – will hit shelves and hard drives on April 12th.

They cite bands like The Smiths, Portishead, The Cure, and the Garden State’s own Bruce Springsteen as influences for the 12-track effort, which SPIN reports is the group’s “most experimental effort to date.” The album title translates to “no returns” in Spanish, and frontman Ricky Geoff said that “half the reason we picked the title is cause if you buy it, you got it!” He says that there are still a few heavy songs on the effort, but that the band wanted to make something more sweeping and graceful.

No Devolucion’s seventh track, “Magnets Caught In A Metal Heart”, is the world’s first taste of the set, and while the synthesizers and vocal effects do make it less heavy than Thursday’s usual output, the cut still features Geoff’s trademark vocal phrasing and a nifty, staccato-picked guitar part. Initially, the singer was embarrassed of how poppy he thought “Magnets” sounded, but he eventually came around and decided to use the song as a warning to fans expecting the same old same old. “This is a really different record,” he said, “so we decided to come out of the gates with a really different song.”

You can check out Spin’s exclusive stream of the song here, and take a look at the tracklist below.
This past Friday night, Geoff Rickly and Co. took the hour or so trip from New Brunswick, NJ out to Long Island.

Many bands would followup a successful fall tour by using this holiday season as a chance to take a well-deserved break before getting back on the road. Thursday, however, is not one of these bands. This past Friday night, Geoff Rickly and Co. took the hour or so trip from New Brunswick, NJ to Farmingdale, NY to play Long Island’s Crazy Donkey. Even though Thursday played not one, but two concerts at New York City’s Bowery Ballroom (including a special engagement) just a couple months prior, the show at the Crazy Donkey was quite the more personal affair.

You see, the full name for the Crazy Donkey is the Crazy Donkey Bar and Grill and that’s exactly what the venue is — a bar that has been retrofitted to become one of Long Island’s only substantial concert venues. The cramped quarters make for a rather intimate show — or as at least as intimate of a show as possible when your brand of music entails prolonged screaming and blaring guitar riffs.

Although Thursday was only on the stage for about an hour due to an early curfew (they even had to cut out playing “War All the Time” because of this), the outfit made sure to squeeze in as many songs as possible within its tight time constraints. Perhaps its best to just let our pictures do the talking. As you’ll see, except for a large wreath hanging on the wall, it was quite a no-frills experience — but in the end isn’t it just about the music anyway?

Setlist:
The Other Side of the Crash/Over and Out (of Control)
For the Workforce, Drowning
Between Rupture and Rapture
Understanding in a Car Crash
Resuscitation of a Dead Man
Subway Funeral
At This Velocity
Division St.
Beyond the Visible Spectrum
Signals Over the Air
Jet Black New Year

“If I still have a voice by the end of the night then this tour wasn’t a success…” – Geoff Rickly

“If I still have a voice by the end of the night then this tour wasn’t a success…” — Geoff Rickly

This past Sunday night (Oct. 25), Thursday returned to New York’s Bowery Ballroom to close out its fall headlining tour in support of the band’s most recent full-length, Common Existence, and although the tour rolled through the same venue just one month prior (Sept. 20), the two shows could not have been more different.

You see, the tour may have officially been in support of Common Existence, but, for Thursday, Sunday night was all about reveling in the past. This New York show was one of two special dates on the tour (the other being Hollywood, CA on Oct. 10) where the band would delve into its music catalog and play a classic CD in its entirety (California got War All The Time). It was on this night that Thursday fans flocked like doves from all over the country (and even Canada) for a chance to see Geoff Rickly and Co. perform Full Collapse, the band’s sophomore release, from front to back.

For those not familiar with Full Collapse, the release of the CD on Victory Records marked Thursday’s major label debut. Although professional reviews were mixed, the album helped the band gain prominence in the current music scene of the time and the first single, “Understanding in a Car Crash”, would go on to become one of the New Jersey outfit’s most well known songs and a staple at live performances. Thursday ended up splitting from Victory and has since released three more full-length LPs, but none have been as popular, or as influential, as Full Collapse was.

The band took the stage around 10 p.m., emerging to the instrumental “A0001” and immediately launched into “Understanding in a Car Crash”, a song that had Rickly, the lead vocalist, throwing himself about the stage to the music (he would go on to spend the majority of the final chorus writhing about on the floor). If the energy exuded during this first song was any indication of things to come, fans knew they were in for a good night.

“Concealer” was next. Rickly took a moment to reminisce, laughing that he didn’t remember playing the song live in long time — With five full-length records under its belt to pick music from, this show was the first time that Thursday would be able to play some of its older material in long while (Full Collapse was released in 2001). The sold out crowd didn’t seem to mind one bit, willingly moshing along to “Standing on the Edge of Summer”, “A Hole in the World”, and “Wind Up” over usual set staples like “Signals Over the Air”, “Division St.”, and Counting 5-4-3-2-1”. The band’s final song of its main set was “How Long is the Night”, after which the members left the stage while the instrumental “I1100” played in the background.

The crowd was left salivating for an encore and the boys from New Brunswick were happy to oblige. They reemerged, and to the crowds delight, Rickly announced that since Full Collapse only had a 42 minute run time, resulting in a short set, they weren’t going to play just one or two more songs for the encore, but rather five or six.

The encore began with “The Other Side of the Crash/Over and Out (Of Control)”, a companion piece to “Understanding”. Three songs off Common Existence followed (“Beyond the Visible Spectrum”, “Friends in the Armed Forces”, and “Circuits of Fever”). These would end up being the only reminders of the album that this tour was in support of the whole night.

Before “Friends in the Armed Forces”, Rickly delivered an impassioned speech imploring fans to support the troops even if they did not support the war. During “Circuits” the band introduced around a dozen large black balloons for the crowd to play with, although, given the combination of the crowd’s pushing, moshing, and stage diving, they barely survived the duration of the song. “Jet Black New Year”, off the Five Stories Falling EP was next. And while Thursday usually closes out their sets with the song, the band saved one more song for the finale. The outfit closed the show with “War All the Time”, the title track off its album of the same name.

After all was said and done, Rickly’s declaration ended up being wrong: he still had his voice, but the show was a total success in capping off the tour. The band let slip that they would be playing a holiday show at Starland Ballroom at the end of December, and if Sunday night was any indication, the place will be packed with people yearning to hear Thursday play on and on and on and on.

A little over a week ago, the modern day prog-rock warriors The Fall Of Troy touched down upon the Bottom Lounge here in Chicago. After belting out heavier than hell tunes such as “Laces Out, Dan!”, “Semi-Fiction” and their newest epic number “Panic Attack,” the incendiary three piece led by guitarist/vocalist Thomas Erak blew speakers off the stage left and right. While dutifully serving as the opener for emo legends Thursday, without a question The Fall Of Troy stole the show following performances by Michigan quintet La Dispute and Louisville rockers Young Widows.

Whether it was Erak’s erratic guitar solos, drummer Andrew Forsman’s sonic blasting or bassist Frank Ene’s manic stage presence, The Fall Of Troy made Chicago its home for over an hour and never let up. Before the mayhem manifested itself in the back reaches of the Bottom Lounge however, I had a fortunate opportunity to interview the electrifying Washington trio before their fantastic performance. What started off as just any old interview quickly turned into an awesome conversation involving unusual tales from the road, Randy Quaid’s bizarre performance in Independence Day and its “all or nothing” gamble on their newest album, In The Unlikely Event. Without further question, I present to you faithful CoS readers, one of the best live bands I have ever seen. Brace yourselves, I’m not kidding… The Fall Of Troy.

High-profile tour kicks of in December.

There’s nothing better to break up the monotony of the holiday season, with all its peace and rigid structuring and fruitcake, than with a punk rock dropkick to the face in the form of an all-star punk tour of Thursday, The Dillinger Escape Plan, and Fake Problems. And like the fruitcake, there should be plenty of nuts.

The show kicks off on December 4th in Farmingdale, NY before winding down on December 19th in Cambridge, MA. But before you West Coast punks start thrashing in the streets, know that the tour will be playing mostly East Coast shows, going no further west than Illinois.

Now if we had to choose which band were to go on last, Thursday and its post-hardcore melodies would get our vote. Face it: they released their fifth studio album, Common Existence, back in February and they headlined this year’s Taste of Chaos tour, making bands like Four Year Strong their music underlings.

Of course, the boys of Dillinger Escape Plan are no slouches. They started their own label, Party Smasher, Inc., back in May, hit up Bonnaroo with Trent Reznor, and they’ve got the album Option Paralysis out in early 2010. Rounding out the trio is Fake Problems; sure the Naples, Florida band isn’t as big as their counterparts, but with a sophomore effort out back in February and a sound that draws from everyone from Blink 182 to Waylon Jennings, they’re sure to make the crowd scream, “Oy.”

Tickets go on sale October 10th via Ticketmaster.
