Late last month, it was reported that Guided By Voices drummer Kevin Fennell had listed his drum kit on eBay and was attempting to sell it for $55,000. This led to an argument between Fennell and GBV frontman Robert Pollard, which resulted in Fennell’s release from the band. The band put out a statement on its Facebook page saying, “Guided By Voices has nothing to do with the sale of Kevin Fennell’s drums. He is acting on his own and is no longer in the band.” Fennell responded by saying that he had resigned from GBV and wasn’t fired.
On tonight’s episode of Rock it Out! Blog, Sami invited Fennell on to share his side of the story. Fennell first explained how he came up with the $55,000 price tag, noting he considered “other musicians that have sold instruments, the actual history of the drums, places the drums have been, key recordings where the drums were used.” He added that the drums had a lot of sentimental value and that “it was a little difficult for me to sell them to begin with.” However, he maintained the $55,000 price was fair.
Asked whether or not he was fired from the band, Fennell emphatically stated that he resigned. “If you look at the email exchange… I resigned on Friday night and he fired me on Saturday morning. I didn’t realize you could be fired after you resigned.”
After being asked if he had made any attempt to contact Pollard since the story had been reported, Fennell said the frontman had made it clear that “he didn’t want to ever hear from me again.” He added that, due to their personal history, “it would seem a shame that it would end like this,” and that he would be “very open to talking to him at some point in time.”
