On today’s episode of Rock it Out! Blog, Sami checks in with Third Man Records’ own Ben Blackwell to discuss the forthcoming reissue of The White Stripes’ Elephant, which will be released worldwide by Third Man on August 27th.
If you recall, a limited edition colored version of the album was released for Record Store earlier this year. “We wanted to do that limited run just for Record Store Day, but the idea was always that we would follow up a couple months later with the black vinyl pressing,” Blackwell explained. “It will be available on black vinyl forever, it will always be in print.”
So what’s the difference between this new vinyl reissue and the version of Elephant you may have sitting on your shelf? Blackwell said “The White Stripes’ UK label, XL, kept a version of Elephant in print for the last 10 years, they never stopped selling it. The original US pressing was on a label called V2 which folded around 2007… so since that time there hasn’t been a domestically available version of Elephant. But now, XL isn’t manufacturing it anymore. Third Man is doing the worldwide vinyl manufacturing of Elephant.”
As for what’s included on the new reissue, Blackwell explained: “When Elephant was first released, there were three different versions: one for America, one for Europe, and one for Australia. Now the version that’s going to be available worldwide is the one everyone previously knew as the North American cover. We pressed it on 180 gram vinyl, included downloaded codes, we manufactured the jackets are stouten old style tip-on sleeves. which are very fancy, heavy, and expensive. It’s mastered from the original analog source.”
Blackwell also shared details on other Third Man Record releases on tap for remainder of 2013 (you’ll want to mark your calendars for Black Friday), as well as a forthcoming live show featuring Mudhoney. Watch the full interview above.
