Green Day drags the Idiot to theaters…

on July 29, 2009, 9:05am

While they’re still traveling from city to city, entertaining America’s youth, Green Day continues to add more to their plate. Not only are they supporting a hit new album, rocking up the charts with “21 Guns” ablaze, and readying a stage performance of 2004’s American Idiot, but the Oakland trio also plan on hitting theaters nationwide — in the near future, at least.

Based on the upcoming, aforementioned stage production — set to debut at California’s Berkley Repertory Theatre this September — the film adaptation of American Idiot just might be the next midnight, cult film, that is if Billie Joe Armstrong has his way. While speaking with the Associated Press (y’know, when he’s not performing to thousands of fans), Armstrong hinted, “I thought American Idiot had a lot in common with something like Rocky Horror Picture Show. It would be great to see a film made out of it someday, too.”

Could the closet transvestites be donning less make up (well, maybe more come to think of it) and slinging on some of Hot Topics best? Possibly. Considering they’ve discussed film plans since ’05, we could be waiting another four years. Let’s see how the stage adaptation fares first.

For now, all you Dr. Frank N. Furters stay put.
