Remember Green Day‘s 2004 mega, ultra, uber comeback album American Idiot? Remember how a few months back we told you about that lil’ theater production happening over on the West Coast? Oddly enough, it seems that the stage version of the band’s beloved album hit audiences hard and with open arms, so much so that the whole thing’s coming to Broadway — at least according to Playbill.com:
A casting notice made public on Nov. 9 indicates that producers are indeed planning a Broadway move for the hot-selling, critically-praised American Idiot, currently playing an extended world-premiere run in Berkeley, CA, through Nov. 15. Until the appearance of this industry casting alert, there has only been mention of a hope for a commercial life for the Michael Mayer-directed musical. “There is a Broadway future for the show, but at this time no dates or theatre are confirmed,” spokesman Michael Hartman told Playbill.com on Nov. 9.
As of now, it’s only a notice — and insiders report that the existing show’s cast will perform on Broadway — but one that’s rather an industry standard. In other words, sort of like how businesses put up a classifieds ad, despite having an employee in mind (aka the reason everyone can’t find a job today). Given the current show’s success, it’s the Berkeley Repertory Theater’s most successful show in its 41-year history, don’t expect too many fresh “idiots,” folks.
In the meantime, if you’re out in the West Coast, be sure to throw on the black denim, don the eyeliner, and gel up the hair and enjoy some punk rock theater. All you have to do is call (510) 647-2949 or visit berkeleyrep.org for more information.
Oh yeah, the actual band’s on tour still, too.
