Watch: The Flaming Lips – “Watching The Planets” (NSFW)

on November 11, 2009, 3:25pm

The Flaming Lips are not easy to categorize beyond absolute weirdness post-Yoshimi; some are a tad put off by lead vocalist Wayne Coyne’s tendency to let his imagination suckle an Ipecac bottle prior to each recording session. While this eccentric band plots a full-on cover of Pink Floyd’s pristine conceptual album,The Dark Side of the Moon, support for the latest Flaming Lips fare Embryonic lingers behind the mind-trip that is “Watching The Planets”. To say that the album this single hails from is bizarre would be a gross understatement; to say that the video for this song is even more so in its own right, well that is something one must see for his or herself.

It is nude people on bicycles, it is a furry vagina, it is Wayne Coyne in a bubble without clothing. Perhaps said bubble represents Coyne in a nutshell? If that is true, then the plethora of sexual puns available give us all the more reason to exclaim maddeningly in unison, “What the fuck?” while checking our combination pizzas for hallucinogenic mushrooms.

Is this video to be considered art imitating life or life imitating art? Is it just life telling us to stop ordering out from Dino’s before surfing YouTube? Either way this is some strange Kool-Aid, homeslice.

Watch all of the ensuing Coyne co-production end results here — then ask yourself if Rammstein’s latest visual outing for its X-Rated “Pussy” single holds more merit in the long run.
