Drive-By Truckers sign with Dave Matthews, unveil The Big To-Do

on December 10, 2009, 1:30pm

Most recently, the Drive-By Truckers could be found touring with the legendary Booker T. Jones. So, perhaps it’s only appropriate to learn that the Athens outfit has hitched up with equally big music figure for its next project.

Patterson Hood and Co. have signed with ATO Records, the label owned by Dave Matthews and which sports a roster featuring My Morning Jacket, Ben Kweller, and The Whigs. In turn, they have also announced the release of their 10th studio studio album, a 13-track effort titled The Big To-Do.

Due for release on March 16th, the followup to 2008’s Brighter Than Creation’s Dark was produced by the band’s longtime producer, David Barbe (Sugar, Bettye LaVette). As for content, Hood describes the record as a return to form.

“It’s very much a rock album,” said Hood. “Very melodic and more rocking than anything we’ve done since disc 2 of Southern Rock Opera.”

The frontman went on to explain that te inspiration for The Big To-Do came to the band during their time on the road:

“We’ve often set our songs and albums in different periods of time, but this one finds us directly in our present. Riding all through the highways of America (and Europe) trying to make sense of a very different world than the one we grew up in,” explained Hood. “I don’t write a lot of songs on the road, but I did more than usual on this album and many more were inspired by or set there, either in a literal sense or something I witnessed or heard about while I was out there.”

The Truckers plan extensive travels in support of a tour. So far, the band has dates scheduled for January and February, with more expected to be announced early next year.
