Black Rebel Motorcycle Club “devastated” by theft of vintage gear

on January 30, 2010, 11:00am

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and crew are “devastated” after sound man (and frontman Robert Beens’ father) Michael Been’s valuable gear was stolen from the band’s storage locker, Chart Attack reports. On Wednesday, the band posted a message on its website describing the incident and requesting people to forward the info along to others. Start copying and pasting!

The message identifies the stolen equipment as a 1954 Fender Esquire (yellow with black pick guard), a 1968 Ampeg Scrolltop fretless bass, a 1964 black Fender Precision bass, and a 1968 Gretsch Country Gentleman Single Cutaway. The gear was “extremely personal” to Michael Been and the band, said the message.

This gear theft is one of several such incidents in recent memory, such as last month’s pre-New Year’s theft of indie rock band Annuals’ stuff, the disappearance of Noah and the Whale’s vintage equipment in October, and a truck theft involving Iggy and the Stooges in 2008. Sheesh, isn’t it enough to steal dozens of their songs off the Internet?

Been was nonchalant about the situation on BRMC’s message board. “I want to thank all of you for your concern and support, but at the end of the day, it’s just stuff, it’s really great stuff, but it’s just stuff,” he wrote. “All that matters is that we love and take care of each other. The rest just mostly gets in the way.”

Hopefully none of that stuff was vital to BRMC’s upcoming tour, which begins February 26th in Sacramento and extends through the end of May, crossing North America and Europe, reaching as far as Denmark.

The band’s fifth studio album, Beat the Devil’s Tattoo, comes out March 9 on Abstract Dragon, in partnership with Vagrant Records.
