Eddie Vedder in legal trouble?

on January 04, 2010, 3:30pm

Two years after he dazzled us with his solo work for Sean Penn’s 2007 film, Into the Wild, Eddie Vedder faces a legal squabble because of it. The song in question? His take on Indio’s “Big Hard Sun”, which Vedder shortened to “Hard Sun” for the soundtrack.

According to Spinner, Gordon Peterson, the Canadian-born singer who wrote and released the song under Indio, claims that, “Vedder altered certain key lyrics of ‘Hard Sun’ … eroding the integrity of the composition” and that Universal never asked for his permission. He doesn’t complain, however, about the cover bringing renewed interest in his 1989 album, Big Harvest, enough so that it was recently re-issued.

As for Vedder, he’s been silent, but his lawyer told the New York Post, “We don’t see any basis for a copyright infringement claim.” That sounds about right.

In the meantime, perhaps someone should buy Peterson a hamburger and call it a day. Sheesh.
