Deer Tick returns with The Black Dirt Sessions

on February 24, 2010, 4:00pm

In just the last year, Deer Tick experienced more than what most bands accomplish in a decade. They released an album and an EP, received the Pitchfork treatment, toured the country again and again, earned the respect of NBC’s Brian Williams, and saw their tour buddies get arrest. Ever the hard workers, the Rhode Island outfit is showing no signs of slowing down.

On June 8th (via Partisan Records), Deer Tick will return with its third full-length, a 11-track effort titled The Black Dirt Sessions. And if you take much stock in the issued press release (via this dude!), there’s a lot to like. For one, the album is said to offer a “sound of a band coming into its own, finding its voice and pouring its collective heart out.”

The release continues: “Even as the Deer Tick live show has become legendary for its raucous, spontaneous moments, this record serves as proof of the band’s incredible musicianship, cohesive nature and most importantly gives us a chance to witness [frontman John] McCauley becoming a fully formed, mature songwriter right in front of our eyes (or ears).”

Among expected highlights is a re-recording of the War Elephant track “Christ Jesus”, which “manages to be even more devastating than the original.” Ooh.

The Black Dirt Sessions will also serve as an introduction to Deer Tick’s latest lineup,  the departure of Andy Tobiassen and new member, guitarist Ian O’Neil who left his previous band Titus Andronicus to join Deer Tick full time.

With all that in mind, check out the album’s tracklist and cover art below. After that, you’ll find the band’s upcoming touring schedule, which is quite extensive. Basically, you’ll have to actually make an effort to avoid them.
