Most new music today can be described as post-something or neo-something else. It’s like the basic terms for discussing music have long been coined and all we have left to do is modify them. Even the genre terms that seem original are usually just clever manipulations or combinations of already existing . That is why I got a kick out of Flying Lotus’ Wikipedia page, where one of his genres listed is “post-genre”. Or as I am going to start calling it: “pre”. Listening to Flying Lotus sounds more like the beginning of something than the end and with his upcoming album, Cosmogramma, he is poised to increase his exposure as much as he is his creativity.
To bridge the gap between now and the album’s May 4th release date, FlyLo will tour a handful of major American cities (P4K). This is probably a good thing, as I don’t know if small-town America is ready for his grimey experimentations. His tour includes stops at just about the highest-profile gigs imaginable: South by Southwest and Coachella (he sure has graduated from playing the dome last year).
Those impatient many (myself included) can feast on his first offering from Cosmogramma, a track titled “Computer Face/Pure Being”. With song titles like that, Thom Yorke collaborations were a foregone conclusion. Listen here.
