While they might plead “unique” and “different” in the studio, when it comes time to promote an album (especially one that’s as highly anticipated as Congratulations), even MGMT can’t ignore the highly dreaded hype machine. After all, without a supporting single, they do have their work cut out for ’em, right?
Keeping in line with its indie sensibilities as of late, Saturday Night Live snagged MGMT for a musical guest spot on April 24th. What they might play is anyone’s guess, but hopefully — if we’re lucky — they’ll put together a dizzying spectacle that will go viral minutes after.
They might not write great skits anymore (Can someone please tell the writers those opening bits with the intolerable Fred Armisen as President Obama are really, really, really grating and not funny?), but SNL really knows how to keep it real and entertain the youthful market. What with Andy Samberg’s flame, Armisen’s involvement in the alt community, and the majority of skits involving Kristen Wiig… they give everyone ages 18-26 a great reason to come back home early on Saturday nights.
Thank god for DVR, though.
