New Order’s Peter Hook to commence spoken-word tour

on March 05, 2010, 9:45am

Wondering what former New Order/Joy Division Peter Hook will be up to while his ex-bandmates release albums and tour with Bad Lieutenant? He’s been DJing around Europe, for one, but he’s got more on his plate: this April, according to Paste, he embarks on a spoken-word tour with a convicted drug smuggler.

He’ll be visiting cities in the U.K. with Howard Marks, an English former hashish smuggler and author of his best-selling 1996 autobiography Mr. Nice. The tour will be called “Peter Hook: An Evening of Unknown Pleasures”. Presumably, Hook and Marks will not be visiting local high schools warning kids to stay off the cannabis. Rather, Hook will be discussing his life as a member of his renowned bands as well as his Manchester nightclub The Hacienda, reports Spinner.

Why Marks? Hook clues us in:

I’ve known him a long time, before my partying days were over, so we had some times. He’s such a nice guy and he’s had a very interesting life. Both have had our rocky paths, shall we say, but we’re very down to earth and like a bit of fun, so it’ll be interesting.

The audience will be able to participate in conversation with Marks and there will be a Q & A session afterward.

However, Hook is no fool and knows people would rather hear him play music than talk, so there will be some Joy Division/New Order-related business to get excited about. Hook will be premiering new footage “left out of the Joy Division documentary,” he said in a recent statement.

“I’ve also decided to play a few instrumentals I like the bass on –- ‘The Happy One’ and ‘Elegia’, for example,” he added. “That gets me out of talking for a few minutes. I’m renowned for my music, not for my talking, so I’ll let some of my music do the talking for me.”
