OK Go leaves EMI, forms own label

on March 11, 2010, 9:05am

Effective April 1st (and we’re pretty confident this isn’t an April Fool’s joke), power-pop Internet sensation OK Go is leaving Capitol/EMI by mutual agreement and starting its own label. The band has always been an inventive bunch.

The new label, called Paracadute, will be responsible for distribution and promotion of OK Go’s music, and the band has an inspired promotional campaign already in the works for its latest and last EMI release, January’s Of the Blue Colour of the Sky. OK GO has been in control of its publishing, merchandise, touring and other non-recording rights from day one, but this move puts the band in full control. In other words, no more New York Times editorials about video embedding.

Frontman Damian Kulash appeared on NPR’s “All Things Considered” yesterday to discuss the split, calling it “amicable.” However, he said the band would “like to thank the people who have worked so hard on our behalf, and we’d like to thank our fans for making this choice an easy one for us.” Well played, Damian. A worthy dig.

OK Go appears on Jimmy Kimmel Live on the band’s big day, commencing a North American tour less than two weeks later on April 13th. The tour stops at a few big fests, including Bamboozle, Bonnaroo and Sasquatch, as well as more late night appearances, including the Late Show with David Letterman on April 28th, The Colbert Report a day later, and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on May 4th.
