Serena-Maneesh to release album recorded in a cave

on March 08, 2010, 3:00pm

The Norwegian indie neo-shoegazers called Serena-Maneesh are set to release their second album, their first for independent label 4AD, which also houses The National, Blonde Redhead, TV on the Radio, and Scott Walker. The followup to the band’s eponymous 2006 debut will be dubbed S-M2: Abyss in B Minor, and it’s a fitting title considering where it was recorded — in a cave.

Recording began in 2008 just outside S-M’s hometown of Oslo. Frontman and main creative mind  Emil Nikolaisen explains that the band’s creativity is often too big for the confines of a studio.

“Studio environments often get on my nerves, and I love the underworld,” he said. “You can silently head down there and do as you please, leave the world behind. So we found this huge cave with stone walls, it looked like a refugee hideout from World War II, with a huge, undiscovered treasure of sound.”

Serena-Maneesh’s treasure of sound will likely not go undiscovered for long, however, as the band is quickly picking up steam in the States and elsewhere — its sound has been repeatedly and favorably compared to that of The Velvet Underground and My Bloody Valentine. Upcoming events include appearances at South by Southwest and Roskilde, along with a month-long North American tour.

Klaxons/Primal Scream collaborator Nick Terry and a former recording engineer for Can, René Tinner, worked on the album after the cave sessions, reportedly spending eight days on each song. At the very least, this album, out March 23rd (via 4AD), has been well-attended to.
