Watch: The National debuts “Terrible Love” on Fallon

on March 11, 2010, 8:14am

Over its decade long existence, The National has crafted its share of musical masterpieces. Whether the lush and lonely “Baby, We’ll Be Fine”, the thunderous “Abel”, or the indie anthem of all indie anthems, “Mr. November”, the Brooklyn outfit has unearthed a sound that is as subdued as it powerful and as depressing as it is uplifting.

If last night’s performance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon was any indication, this trend will likely continue into the band’s forthcoming fifth album, High Violet. In a manner similar to previous songs like “Fake Empire” and “Mr. November”, the record’s lead track, “Terrible Love”,  explodes like a fury, transitioning from a slow and atmospheric beginning to a pulsating, guitar driven peak. And just like that, the song ends, leaving one both utterly wowed and desperately yearning for more. In fact, I don’t think it would be much of a stretch to already classify “Terrible Love” in the same realm as those aforementioned musical masterpieces. It’s f’ing awesome.

High Violent is due out on May 11th via 4AD. See them on tour soon, or tonight, if you were lucky enough to score tickets to their performance at the Bell House in Brooklyn (like I was!).
