Check Out: Earl Greyhound & Shooter Jennings – “Everything Else Is Illusion” (CoS Premiere)

on April 07, 2010, 9:13am

The song you are about to hear is from Shooter Jennings, the legendary rocker son of country outlaw Waylon Jennings. And while you’ll find it on Jennings’ new album Black Ribbons, you should pay attention because it features Matt Whyte of the Brooklyn blues-rock trio Earl Greyhound. While for Jennings it’s just another song, the track is an opportunity for the band to take their ’70s sound to a bigger stage.

For a group of performers so far removed from the ’70s rock scene and still striving toward that magical sound, they’re not completely obsessed with hitting the mark. They’ve taken that down home vibe of the senior Jennings and stuck in some menacing guitar, rumbling synth line and vague electronic blurts of noise, and sprinkled on a little metal for the hell of it. The good old boys are a little darker than their forefathers, like some vaguely ’80s New Wave-rock monster, but there’s no denying this track is real.

And speaking of bigger stage, catch Earl Greyhound on tour with OK Go and Coheed and Cambria right now. And if you’re in the mood for further rocking, click here to download their song “Ghost and The Witness”. Suspicious Package, the band’s sophomore album, hits stores April 13th viaHawk Race Records.
