Mates of State announce U.S. tour/traveling variety show

on April 21, 2010, 11:00am

Of all the tour announcements I have ever written, this is by far the coolest ever. As you may know, this summer, Mates of State will unleash Crushes (The Covers Mixtape), a 10-track effort that hears the husband and wife duo covering the likes of Death Cab for Cutie, Belle & Sebastian, The Mars Volta, Tom Waits, and more.

In support of the release, the duo will embark on the “Summer Crushes” tour this June and July. Now here’s where it gets really cool. The two month trek is being billed as a “virtual traveling variety show,” and promises to feature — get ready! — live magic, sword swallowers, contortionists, human blockheads, and more.  What’s more, Mates of States’ own Jason Hammel will serve as the tour’s resident DJ, while Philadelphia alt-rock outfit Free Energy, Brooklyn indie rockers Suckers, and comedians Todd Berry and Nick Thune will take turns opening. Unique to say the least.

Tickets for this extravaganza — and you know you want them — will go on sale starting Friday, March April 23rd via Ticketmaster.com.
