N.E.R.D. gearing up for a “new” new album

on April 07, 2010, 2:30pm

Pharell Williams, aka Skateboard P, aka one-half of Virginia space-rap producers The Neptunes, is getting ready to release a brand new album with the now four-piece N.E.R.D., entitled Nothing.  No release date has been set, but MTV UK reports that the band’s new single, entitled “Hot & Fun”, will be hitting the airwaves in the next few weeks.

If you remember, N.E.R.D.’s new album was supposed to be called Instant Gratification, but, after recently choosing to scrap some 27 songs, the group decided to hit the reset button and return to the studio.

“They sounded great, but what were they saying?” Williams asked rather cryptically. “It’s almost like we did this whole entire album with our eyes closed, not because it was that easy but because it was that important to reconnect to what we feel and I would say this album is like scrapping everything and starting with nothing”.

The band had debuted several selections from Instant Gratification during live performances last year. Among them was a song titled “90210”, and by the looks of this video from an opening gig on Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3 tour, cuts from the trashed album would have featured more staccato percussion, but less of the annoying falsetto singing we’ve come to expect from N.E.R.D.

Still, fans of the group shouldn’t mourn the loss of Instant Gratification too much, as the band seems to be sticking to its spaced out roots on Nothing. They’re even playing a tribute to Yuri Gagarin this Saturday, and Williams said that Nothing includes special frequencies that only women can experience.

“Women will literally feel this,” said Williams. There is still no word on whether women will have to sit on their speakers to really experience the new album.

N.E.R.D is currently wrapping up a college tour and will hit the summer European festival circuit.
