Tears for Fears wants to rule the road

on April 05, 2010, 2:00pm

Whoever said the ’80s died young? Apparently everyone missed the call. Because when we’re not hearing ’80s influences in every indie-rock dance trio today, we’re being served with reunion after reunion like they’re fucking hotcakes or something. Though there’s little room to complain (save for any Boy George comebacks), it’s just something interesting to note. Let’s be real here, a lot of these returning acts were pegged as one-hit wonders throughout the ’90s.

Unlike most of its brethren, however, Tears for Fears remains a radio staple. “Shout”, “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”, and “Head Over Heels” all continue to play at our dentist’s offices, and face it, you couldn’t be happier to hear ’em (especially if your teeth are being yanked around). The group’s relevance is pretty high these days, too. (You can thank Donnie Darko director Richard Kelly for that.) In fact, most of our favorite acts today wouldn’t be anywhere without ’em. We’re looking at you M83.

That’s why the idea of a tour sounds fan-tabulous — especially one so soon. After they finish an opening stint for Spandau Ballet in Australia — anyone else shocked by this? — the duo of Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith head back to the States for what’s shaped up to be one oddball tour. With gigs ranging from New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom and Ft. Lauderdale’s Broward Center for the Performing Arts to radio shows in both respected states, you really wouldn’t be able to gauge the group’s prominence by the itinerary. For one, it’s hard to imagine the band playing in D.C.’s 9:30 Club; after all, their sound is built for arenas. But maybe that’s just a personal discretion.

Regardless, cheers to the summer reunion. We’ll be seeing you August 31st.
