Despite the Starbucks-ification of its sound, for better or for worse, on its new album, Band of Horses is still a band with a wealth of talent. To prove just that, the Seattle outfit tackled “Can’t Hardly Wait, a song by the always stellar The Replacements. And if you’re thinking there’s no matching the legendary band, BoH’s alt-country leanings make for a sweet show of respect for the alternative rock icons.
The track, primarily an acoustic number played at Columbus, Ohios CD101 Big Room (via 24B), is one that is totally their own. Ben Bridwell’s gentle, often heartbroken voice doesn’t even try to come close to Paul Westerberg’s haggard, cracked voice. What’s a song of some biting edge and wit has somehow found a sweeter, more innocent existence from BoH. But what both versions do share is some comparable emotional high points that highlight the power of the track, regardless of who is playing it.
Infinite Arms is out now via Columbia Records. Check the band out on tour, too.
