Amidst the hubbub that was last week, it may have been easy to overlook the fact that The Roots are on their way back… and soon. The recent Fallon-eers have announced the release date, cover art, and tracklist for their much anticipated ninth studio album How I Got Over.
Those of you Roots savvy (or who clicked on the link I just provided) will already know that The Roots have tapped into the indie community for this one with appearances by our generations Traveling Wilburys, Monsters of Folk, and everybody’s favorite Andy Samberg-dating harpist, Joanna Newsom. For those selfsame savvy folks, we have a treat. One of the indie-clad tracks has hit the web already.
“Dear God 2.0”, the Jim James-featuring rework of Monsters of Folks’ opening track, hears The Roots combine a sobering, James-sung chorus with extra percussion and some crisp, conscious rhymes to create one nice little ditty. In other words, if you were thinking this was just a Monsters of Folk remix, think again.
Looks like we’ll have to pull out our hair picks and Yankees caps a little earlier than expected, but honestly, is that anything to complain about? Check it out below.
How I Got Over is due for release on June 22nd via Def Jam.
