Furthur to play 6 classic Dead albums at Further Fest

on May 25, 2010, 1:15pm

In many ways Deadheads are like salmon or reclusive birds. If one looks hard enough, one can spot a Deadhead anywhere, but it’s much easier to find them during periodic mass gatherings. Entire towns can succumb to the tie-dyed, bus driving masses that assemble for Gathering of the Vibes, All Good, Nateva, and the numerous other jam-festivals.

40 years after the Grateful Dead released Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty, former Dead members Phil Lesh and Bob Weir have decided to celebrate with a festival of their own. Now members of the super group Furthur, Lesh and Weir chose Angels Camp in Northern California to host Further Fest. The three-day event will feature an acoustic stage with conversations and stories by Grateful Dead family members, an “open aire” soundcheck and an all-star superjam on Friday night, plus two-headlining performances by Furthur on Saturday and Sunday, thus generating the largest gathering of Deadheads since the unfortunate death of Jerry Garcia 15 years ago.

Taking place May 28-30th, Furthur will provide fans with an unforgettable introduction to summer, performing six classic Grateful Dead albums in their entirety. The band will perform American BeautyWorkingman’s Dead, and Anthem of the Sun on Saturday. Sunday will feature Blues For AllahAoxomoxoa, and Terrapin Station. Not to stray from their jam roots, each nights performance will feature dynamic improvisations amidst the classic Dead tracks.

Tickets to Further Fest are still available here for $134.00. If you can’t make it to the festival, Jackie Greene has begun interviewing Lesh and Weir about these early Dead albums, so throw on your smelliest Dead shirt and watch the footage here. A complete list of Further Fest acts follows.
