You normally don’t see the artist subject to a tribute album supporting said tribute album with a live performance. But that’s exactly what happened last night when legendary singer/songwriter John Prine supported the forthcoming release of Broken Hearts And Dirty Windows: Songs Of John Prine by performing his 1991 classic “All The Best” on The Late Show with David Letterman. All that being said, the performance ultimately turned out to as much of a tribute to Prine as the tribute album itself, with Prine’s accompanist, My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James (or Yim Yames for this respective performance) soon taking over lead vocals. From there, Prine took it all in, watching Yames celebrate his words with sincere intensity before ultimately rejoining him for the songs climax with musicians ending together in unison.
As for the evening’s other highlight? Listening to Letterman say Yim Yames was pretty darn hilarious.
