David Gray to release two discs of new material

on June 14, 2010, 2:15pm

Back in the year 2000, David Gray was a welcome change to hear mellowly flowing out of girl’s dorm room windows. This was about a year before Jack Johnson would take over their lives, back when Dave Matthews (“Dave” as the call him) and Ben Harper were the dreamboats de jour. Gray’s music was thoughtful, not just sentimental ballads that preyed on the 18 year old girl’s desire for a guy (or anyone) who understands them. Gray seemed, well, like a grown up. And he had a cool accent.

Since this era, Gray has faded a bit from the spotlight, but still remains active on both the recording and touring fronts. On August 17th, the English songwriter will release his second collection of original material in less than a year. With Ryan Adams going metal, I guess Gray figured there was an opening in the songwriter-who-pumps-out-albums-at-a-ridiculous-pace market. The self-produced affair (don’t get me started…) would span two cds if people still bought them, with the first being the newly recorded album, Foundling, and the second featuring nine older, never-before-released tracks. Somewhat strangely, it is the second disc that features the first single, “A Moment Changes Everything” (via Direct Current).

Gray will hit the road this summer, playing rather large venues with Ray LaMontagne. Single men: go to these shows. Seriously, it will serve you well.
