Weezer releases unofficial U.S. soccer song “Represent”

on June 11, 2010, 11:45am

Hey Americans, you know the Super Bowl? Well it turns out there’s a version of it for soccer! It’s called the World Cup and apparently it’s a pretty big deal for countries that can, you know, actually play the game.

Weezer understands. Lead singer Rivers Cuomo has been a soccer nut since he was a kid and now he rallies the troops with synth-tastic anthem “Represent” (via RIO!B). It starts out sounding all “I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight”, but soon raises fists high for a massive stadium jam. Though it sounds all feel-good motivational, but the message is clear: “It matters whether you win or lose.” Forget what your mama told you.

Weezer is only the latest band to catch Cup fever. We Are Scientists recently recorded a pro-England song, despite the fact that they’re from California and the U.S. faces off against England today. Traitors.

The song is being given away for free on iTunes.
