Stream: Chris Walla covers Led Zeppelin’s “In The Evening”

on September 22, 2010, 1:24pm

If you were like us, you didn’t expect to see the likes of Chris Walla being tapped for a Led Zeppelin covers album. But what do you know, the Death Cab for Cutie member and producer extraordinaire takes a crack at “In The Evening” for From The Land of Ice And Snow: The Songs of Led Zeppelin. And if you’re wondering, yes, Walla does add his own sensitive groove to it, but you’ll like it regardless.

Released in 1979, In Through The Out Door was critically panned, despite achieving a No. 1 spot on Billboard. That explains why some fans might not be too familiar with this deep cut. But for Walla, who claims to be “late Led Zep apologist”, it’s a pretty perfect choice. Despite being tardy for the party, Walla gave the song new life; after stripping away a verse and the bridge, he slowed down the synth-heavy jam into a somber little ditty that crawls along slowly and painfully. If anything, it captures the pain Led Zep was experiencing in their personal lives during the album’s recording.
