Phoenix scored flick takes the cake at Venice Film Festival

Marriage is supposed to be a symbiotic relationship where spouses use each other’s gifts to lift one another up, and while Phoenix frontman Thomas Mars and director Sofia Coppola are merely “life-partners,” it looks like they get the gist of what it means to be committed to one another in so many ways.  Just look at what happened at this weekend’s Venice Film Festival.

Coppola’s film, Somewhere, which includes sonic contributions from Phoenix, took home the festival’s highest prize – the Golden Lion Award. While it was probably Coppola’s story about the transformation of a star washed up in a life of excess that won the award for her, we can’t help but think that soundscapes provided by our favorite Frenchmen – who scored portions of the film – contributed the to the overall emotional impact of the film, which also stars Stephen Dorff and Elle Fanning (yes, Dakota’s sister).

There’s no release date set for the soundtrack – which also features a Strokes demo by Julian Casablancas – and the movie doesn’t come out until December 22nd, so you’ll have to settle for this trailer in the meantime.
