Rancid side project releases long-awaited debut

on September 05, 2010, 12:30pm

Devil’s Brigade, the side project fronted by Rancid/Operation Ivy bassist Matt Freeman, has been around a long time. They first appeared on a 2002 Hellcat Records compilation, and later released a couple of singles. After eight years though, they’ve finally gotten around to dropping an album. ‘Bout time.

The self-titled debut includes Rancid frontman Tim Armstrong on guitar and DJ Bonebroke of L.A. punk legends X on the skins. The punk throwback LP hit stores last week, complete with an elaborate theatrical concept.

“The original concept for this record was going to be a musical,” Freeman said in a press release. “Tim had been kicking around an idea of doing a musical about the building of the Golden Gate Bridge. He had the title ‘Half Way To Hell Club’. This was based on the name for the bridge workers who fell off the bridge while it was being built and fell into the safety net that was between them and the ocean. We grew up in the East Bay looking at that bridge and it has always been a part of our lives. Six of those songs ended up on the Devil’s Brigade record. The other songs were all original Devil’s Brigade songs from the first demo. We thought they were still good and we should record them again.”

Freeman takes the group on tour this fall to promote the release, though it’s unclear if that group will include Armstrong and Bonebroke (the band’s Facebook page currently includes only Freeman as an official member). The group – whoever they turn out to be – start the long trek opening for Street Dogs September 7th in San Antonio. Check out the album tracklist and a whole lot of tour dates below.
