Cold War Kids stand out as one of the most recent examples of a band completely obliterated by the dreaded sophomore slump. After kicking ass with their 2006 debut Robbers & Cowards, the Cali rockers dropped the rather forgettable Loyalty to Loyalty in 2008. Also forgettable were their live performances in support of the album, but let’s just blame it on apathy.
Now, though, Cold War Kids are ready to turn the page — hopefully for the better — with the January 25th, 2011 release of their third LP, Mine is Yours. This time around, the recipe was to tap producer Jacquire King (Kings of Leon, Tom Waits, Norah Jones, Modest Mouse) and then hit studios in both Nashville, TN and Los Angeles, CA. As for the lyrical content, frontman Nathan Willett chose to focus on the +/-‘s of relationships.
“I got home from tour and realized I was married. All my friends had either jumped in the deep end of a relationship or had drowned. When did things get so serious? We fought growing up but the wild nights and free-for-all caught up to us. Some people got out in time and others had permanent damage. For this record, I wrote about the joys and failures of commitment all around me,” explained Willett. I wonder what the wifey thinks…
Ahead of the release, Cold War Kids will embark on a two week road trip, which is split up between November and December. Confirmed tour dates follow.
