Named after a rather dark Danish fairy tale of the same name, Brighton’s Esben and the Witch write songs that even the Brothers Grimm might find eerie. After dropping a couple EPs between 2009 and 2010, the trio have steadily developed a following by taking their minimal, yet vocally expansive sound on the road with fellow Brits The xx and landing a record deal with New York-based Matador Records in August.
Esben and the Witch made their Matador debut with the 12″ EP “Marching Song” on October 11th. The EP’s three tracks are more than deserving of purchase, but it’s the title track’s video that is truly unshakable. Peep the outfit’s bloody introduction below.
This dark atmosphere continues on the single ‘Warpath”, the first single from the trio’s much anticipated debut LP, Violet Cries. The full length will be available February 8th in the States and January 31st in the UK. The album’s gothic, post-punk sound was recorded and produced by the bands Daniel Copeman — the bloodied, bearded one.
