of Montreal plot spring tour, new EP and album

on January 10, 2011, 8:42pm

One look at of Montreal‘s 10-album-long discography and it’s quite clear that Kevin Barnes isn’t one for downtime. So it’s not surprising to learn that less than four months after the release of False Priest, the band’s mastermind is already hard at work on two new studio efforts. In a new interview with SPIN, Barnes reveals that the band is not only gearing up for the spring release of a brand new EP, but that he’s also three songs into of Montreal’s 11th full-length.

The EP, titled The Controller Sphere, will feature six songs taken from the False Priest sessions, which Barnes says aren’t that different from what ended up up on the album. “Some of them are a bit noisier and a little bit less groove-based, and some are just a bit artier.” And while a release date for the EP is still forthcoming, that hasn’t prevented Barnes from beginning work on False Priest‘s proper follow-up… oh and by the way, we totally have our first Age of Adz-influenced album.

“I love the spirit of that album,” Barnes told SPIN in regards to Sufjan Stevens’ latest LP. “You don’t get the sense that he’s making something to play on the radio. It’s just this pure artistic statement. I’m trying to get back to that place.” So far, Barnes has written three songs – ”This Planet Is an Orphanage”, “Ye, Renew the Plaintiff”, and “We Will Commit Wolf Murder” — and their descriptions range from “genre hopping” to “Curtis Mayfield sounding” to “slightly angular and slightly dissonant.”

Barnes plans to complete the yet-to-be-titled album once of Montreal finishes its next round of tour dates, which begin April 28th in Washington, D.C. and run until a homestate gig in Atlanta on May 20th. Find all confirmed dates below.
