When Julian Casablancas wails, “I’ll wait for you, you wait for me,” on The Strokes‘ new single “Under Cover of Darkness”, off their upcoming fourth studio LP, Angles, it’s sort of tongue in cheek. We did wait… through several solo albums and countless news bites. It took a long time — some five years, some pricey therapy — but we made it.
Boy, does it feel good.
The old sound remains intact. The new era feels sharp. Fabrizio Moretti shakes out a fun shuffle, guitarists Albert Hammond, Jr. and Nick Valensi play hopscotch with a handful of popcorn riffs that lead to a blossoming-yet-biting chorus, all while bassist Nikolai Fraiture makes sure the bubble doesn’t burst. Oh, and those harmonies, too! Oy gevalt! It’s everything you love about The Strokes. It’s addictive, it’s heart wrenching, and it sizzles. Casablancas might be screaming, “So long, my friend…”, but we’re saying hello…
…and welcome back, guys.
