If you’re looking for an excuse to dip to Tokyo and/or Osaka this summer, then the weekend of August 13-14 might be a good one to spend those frequent flier miles on. That’s because the annual Summer Sonic music festival returns to those two Japanese cities that weekend, and it will bring with it the likes of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Strokes, a still to be confirmed special guest from the UK, The Mars Volta, Suede, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Deerhunter, ODD FUTURE, Friendly Fires, and Two Door Cinema Club, among others.
Much like the UK-based Reading and Ledes Festival, the Tokyo and Osaka components of Summer Sonic takes place simultaneously, with acts playing one city the first day and then the other on the second day. That’s with the exception of Primal Scream and Public Image, LTD, however; the former, who will be playing their 1991 classic Screamadelica, will appear only in Osaka, while the later will stick to Tokyo. So choose wisely.
Additional acts are still forthcoming, but you can stay completely up to date by bookmarking our Festival Outlook.
Ticketing information and additional festival details can be found on the festival’s website.
