Check Out: Omar Rodríguez-López – "Casate Colmillo"

on March 23, 2011, 11:01am

Omar Rodríguez-López‘s SXSW showcase went down without the drama that manifested itself at some of the festival’s other shows, and that’s a good thing because his epic tunes probably provide all the complexity that he needs in his life. Just listen to the six-minute, Spanish-language epic titled “Casate Colmillo” streaming below (via SKOA) and see for yourself; it sounds like a song that sounds like something Jack White might have come up with if he were tripping balls in the Chihuahuan Desert, doesn’t it?

What’s more amazing is that the cut is a mere bonus track on Rodriguez-Lopez’s upcoming quadruple LP, Telesterion, which is due on Record Store Day, April 16th. The massive, 38-song effort’s tracks (the vinyl version has an extra track) were culled from the 35-year-old’s various solo and collaborative efforts, and are intended to help new fans get an overview of his work. “I just thought the whole concept of it should be a place were people can come and discover what it is that I do for fun,” Rodríguez-López said in a recent interview. “That’s why I took that title. [In Greek Mythology], Telesterion is a place of initiation.”

Fans looking to take it past an mere initiation will have the opportunity to do so as the Omar Rodríguez-López Group has also announced a batch of springtime tour dates. The six-week jaunt kicked off with the aforementioned SXSW showcase, and takes the band across the South, where they’ll play dates in Knoxville, Atlanta, and Ashville, before treating the Northeast to a handful of shows. The Midwest and Mexico also get shows before O-Rod heads west to play Coachella. The last batch of gigs are set for Texas, and most shows feature fellow psych-rock aficionado Zechs Marquise playing support.

Rodríguez-López’s other band has a trio of overseas festival dates scheduled, but it’s still unclear whether the earthquake in Japan has altered plans for Summer Sonic appearances in Osaka and Tokyo. Ticketing information is available here, and the tracklist for Telesterion is listed above the tour dates.
