Curren$y announces free album and tour dates

on April 07, 2011, 2:45pm

Despite the deficiency in spelling, New Orleans rapper Curren$y is an entrepreneurial at heart. Realizing that being an MC is about giving the fans what they want, the rapper has a plethora of releases in the works, including a free LP dropping April 20th and a U.S. tour kicking off the same day (via Prefix). That’s got to be a record for most activity by a musician on 4/20.

Said release is Covert Coup, which features production solely from The Alchemist. The effort also sports cameos and collaborations with Freddie Gibbs, Smoke DZA, Prodigy, and Fiend. It also marks the first of many offerings planned by Curren$y in 2011. In fact, the week after its release, he’s dropping the digital single “#jetsgo”, and the CD/film for Muscle Car Chronicles should be out sometime this summer.  You can check out the cut “Ventilation” from the EP below; the old soul sample is distinctly Midwest hip-hop, but Spitta’s southern drawl gives the sound a harder edge.

The EP will also be the last release by Damon Dash’s BluRoc Records as Curren$y signed with Warner Bros. in February. Other albums to be put out by WB in the near future include Pilot Talk III, The Jet Life album, and an LP with Chuck Inglish entitled Puff Daddy.

As for live outings, the tour kicks off on April 20th in Curren$y’s hometown. From there, gigs across Texas litter his itinerary, all leading him into the Southwest, California, and the Pacific Northwest before wrapping up on May 12th in Bellingham, WA. Stay tuned for more dates as they pop up.
