Check Out: Neil Young – “Amber Jean”

on May 18, 2011, 1:53pm

With a clearly pronounced history of continually releasing tracks from his gigantic archive, one has to wonder why Neil Young does it. Is it to cash in? With an ethos and worldview like he’s shown over the years, probably not. A fear of being forgotten? Between his solo career and Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, people will be listening to Young in their personal hover cars.

Perhaps, then, it’s for more personal reasons; with so much life lived and music created, even some of the important stuff fell to the wayside. Like, for instance, the cut “Amber Jean”, which Young first started performing just weeks after his daughter Amber’s birth while on tour in the U.S. with the International Harvesters in 1984/1985.

Now, that ode to the wonders of fatherhood gets its chance to be heard when it’s released as one of the 12 tracks on A Treasure. While the record doesn’t drop till June 14th, is offering a stream of the track right now. Performed in September 1984 during a gig in Nashville, TN, the song is a folksy, rollicking celebration of life by a man clearly in love with this new bundle of joy.

For the first time since 1968, Young will hit the road with Buffalo Springfield this June, with the CD, Blu-ray, and digital formats of A Treasure arriving in stores June 14th via Reprise Records. Rolling Stone is also reporting another volume in Young’s Archives series is in the works, but nothing definitive has yet been announced.
