Jay-Z, Odd Future developing shows for Adult Swim

on May 19, 2011, 12:17pm

Whether it be through crisp rhymes, movie reboots, or the former home of Keith Van Horn, Jay-Z earns his money in many ways. But the hip hop mogul has yet to venture into television — until now.

According to HipHop DX, both Jay-Z and L.A. hip hop collective Odd Future are developing shows for the network. Details are few and far between, but Hova’s project is believed to be an original animated series, while Odd Future are developing a show described as a mixture of Jackass and Chappelle Show, reports Billboard.

The news follows Jay-Z’s surprise performance at Adult Swim’s “Owns the 9ight” concert in Manhattan last night, where the television network announced its 2011-2012 lineup. Jay-Z did not officially announce the project as expected, but Adweek reports that the deal is official. Below, you can watch video of Jay-Z and Swizz Beatz performing “On to the Next One” from The Blueprint 3 during the surprise gig.

Of course, this is not first time the worlds of hip hop and stoner cartoons have crossed paths. In 2005, Danger Mouse and MF Doom released The Mouse and the Mask, a collaborative LP featuring samples of music from various Adult Swim shows, while rappers Mos Def, Busta Rhymes and Snoop Dogg voiced characters on the series The Boondocks.

More recently, the network gave Major Lazer its own show and hosted the third annual Ragbag of Jollification tour, which featured the likes of Best Coast, Wavves, and Pusha T. Plus, Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Home recently wrote a theme song for Aqua Unit Patrol Squad One.
