Right after his wife gave us a nice clip, Jay-Z hit up New York City’s Mercer Hotel to preview the year’s most anticipated album. Last night, the rapper hosted a Watch the Throne listening session for select members of the press and two contest winners, who purchased the first two copies of the album when it became available for pre-order.
According to MTV.com, Jay-Z played a dozen or so- songs destined for the album, including “Lift Off”, which features Beyoncé and is heavily rumored to be the album’s next single. (Jay-Z also said a music video featuring Beyoncé is being considered). Other tracks included “No Church” and “I Can’t Stop”, which samples the Flux Pavilion track. Another cut, “Living So Italian”, features a sample of Andrea Bocelli’s “Con Te Partirò”.
Aside from Beyoncé, the only other guest contributor slated for the album is Odd Future crooner Frank Ocean. According to Jay-Z, he initially tapped Ocean for his own new solo album, which he said is already in the works, but enjoyed his work so much that he had him contribute to tracks on Watch the Throne. Also, no producers were identified, but according to Complex Editor-in-Chief Noah Callahan-Bever, it appears The RZA, No I.D., and Hit-Boy all had a hand, in addition to Kanye himself.
All that being said, Jay-Z did note that the album’s tracklist has yet to be finalized, and tracks like the controversial lead single “H.A.M.” could be left off the final cut. In fact, he added that the Watch the Throne previewed last night was the third version of the album that they’ve recorded.
As of now, there is still no release date; Jay-Z only said that it is “coming soon.” So, pre-order it now.
